All I ever wanted was to get back to my daughter. But I'm starting to think... there's just no way home.
- —William Baker
History
A Troubled Childhood
A Troubled Child
William would eventually renounce his criminal past, settling down with a woman named Emma and start a family with her. However, he and Emma were devastated when their daughter, Penny, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Though not normally a devastating disease, [1] Penny's case was severe, leading her to have debilitating breathing problems that caused her to be unable to live a normal life. Falling further and further into debt, William returned to his criminal ways, now using the alias of Flint Marko to avoid being traced back to his family. He would continue to rob banks and steal valuables to try and fund his daughter's treatments, but his wife, not receiving answers to her questions about his funds, filed to separate from her husband, not willing to abide by his less than scrupulous habits.
Sandman's Waiting
Further distressed by his wife's decision to leave him, Flint had one ace left in his pocket. He knew that chemotherapy was a treatment for cancer, and reasoned that perhaps his daughter could be saved by the same methods. However, being a man of few means, all he could do was bring a sample of his daughter's hair to a particle accelerator in New Jersey, and hope that tests would find the mutation had been eradicated. Instead, he would develop a mutation of his own: Flint got too close to the accelerator, and found himself dissolved into the sand on which he stood. After three days, he was able to assume a corporal form, with only the locket of his daughter a reminder of what he'd left behind. Seeking answers for what he was, he went in search of the girl in the locket: Penny Baker.

Appearance
Personality
Unlike many Spider-Man rogues, there is barely a malicious bone in William Baker's body. He is largely, in his own words, "not a bad person, just unlucky." Nearly every "villanous" act he committed early on in his career as a criminal was motivated by the desire to amass funds to provide for his daughter and fund her medical treatments. After turning into the Sandman, he continued his pursuit for funds and only ever fought with superheroes when they had past impacted him, or tried to get in his way. He never started a fight, and he never sought to cause undue harm or property damage unless he was ragefully cutting loose.
Powers and Abilities
Amorphous Psammokinetic Physiology: William Baker has the ability to convert his body from a flesh-and-blood state into one composed of particles of sand, either entirely or in part, and can manipulate the density of that sand therein.
- Density Shifting: Sandman can compact his sand grains to become as hard as sandstone, allowing him to punch with superhuman force and withstand greater than average impact forces. He is able to resist super-strong punches from the likes of Spider-Man unfazed, and avoid injury from super-strong beings as strong as the Thing or the Hulk, while duking it out with them in equal measure. Also, he can reduce his density and separate into individual grains, which allows him to fly (since each grain is lighter than air), form vortexes or localized sandstorms, avoid physical attacks, and rotate with immense cutting force. By altering his density both ways in rapid succession, he is capable of ensnaring and tossing away opponents.
- Shape-Shifting: Sandman can create psammokinetic constructs, shaping his sand form into any shape he can imagine. He is particularly fond of making his forearms into weapons such as hammers, flails, spiked maces, and large fists; creating shields which can hold back the Rhino, stretching, deforming, expanding, or contorting his body at will.
- Self-Sustenance: Theoretically, if he remains in sand form for long periods of time, the Sandman would not need to eat, drink, or breath, and is functionally immune to toxins. However, if he remains as scattered sand for too long, he tends to lose his consciousness and enter a state of suspended animation.
- Sand Blasts: Sandman can propel his sand outwards in large amounts, with tremendous force, in various projectile forms, which hit with the force of full sandbags. The problem with this is that he has a finite amount of sand, and his physical body is diminished the more of it he expels. He has, on occasion, used the element of surprise to spray sand from his mouth with tremendous force, similar to the villain in the film the Mummy.
- Sand Absorption: Sandman can absorb actual sand to add to his body's size, either to replenish lost sand or to grow in size, having previous attained a height of over 100 (a hundred) feet while directly on top of a sandy beach. He can also manipulate the sand in his environment if he is in contact with it, as shown when he formed sandlike shields to protect Spider-Man from Electro's bolts.
- Superhuman Strength: Sandman has a tremendous level of physical strength, being able to lift and / or press 85 (eighty-five) tons.

The Silicon Man suit
the Silicon Man: The Silicon Man, as it was deemed by the Wizard, was a suit of armor cobbled together from technology created by the Wizard and Mister Fantastic. The suit consisted of several armored components, and many purple canisters containing various elements. These canisters were equipped with needles which activated upon being touched, and would inject the elements into Sandman's flesh, enabling him to assume new forms with new traits if he was in his sand form when injecting the elements. The compounds he could create, and assume the traits of, are as follows:
- chemicals that allow him to obtain a fully solid, but immobile, concrete form,
- carbon to create silicon carbide, which renders him crystalline, invulnerable, and sharp,
- sodium to create sodium silicate, which allows him to adhere to nearly any surface,
- chloride to create silicon tetrachloride, which causes him to produce thick smoke,
- boric acid, which forms a rubbery, proto-putty that allows him to very loosely reflect solid physical attacks,
- and chemicals that create a quartz form which, though brittle, produces a massive electrical shock when crushed.
