Wanda Maximoff and her twin brother, Pietro, developed their mutant abilities at a young age. While Pietro was more connected to his body's spirituality and connection to sorcery, Wanda's mutation made her physically capable of moving at lightspeed.
By the time they became teenagers, their conflicting ideologies led to them separating and going on to live their own lives. Wanda moved to the United States, where the mutant rights movement was at the forefront of the political discussion. She adopted the alias of the Scarlet Speedster, and began rescuing mutants from the MRD and the Sentinels, eventually attracting the attention of the X-Men.
However, before they could ever recruit her, she was caught in a Sentinel's crossfire, which provided the Silver Sentry with the perfect opportunity to transport her to the Nexus and recruit her onto Team X.
She quickly became one of the Team's most valued members, and eventually joined Cyclops and the others in attacking the Silver Sentry. But they quickly learned their power was no match for his, and they were placed into stasis.
Eventually, their replacements were able to free them and the two teams joined forces, finally taking control of the Nexus for themselves. Wanda continued to serve on the Team for some time before their conflict with the Squadron Supreme boiled over into a war against Wanda's brother, the White Warlock. After proving himself to be too powerful for the other heroes, Wanda sacrificed herself by distracting him, which allowed her the opportunity to erupt with lightning from the inside, finally claiming both of their lives.
