History

Quote1 No, you see, it's all just smoke and mirrors, practical effects. "The Mandarin", it's not real. Quote2
-- Trevor Slattery

Trevor Slattery was a struggling actor moving from job to job in London, doing whatever he could to scrape by. He eventually became addicted to drugs and stopped trying to become famous, as he had resigned to the fact that it would never happen.

After years in his slump, he was approached by the Advanced Idea Mechanics spokesperson Aldrich Killian. Killian offered him the chance to achieve worldwide fame while not having to kick his drug addiction. Slattery enthusiastically agreed, and after being briefed on his role as the Mandarin, he came to see it as the biggest break possible.

He underwent plastic surgery and began traveling the world with AIM to film propaganda videos that would stir the world into chaos for the purpose of increasing demand for AIM's inventions. His newfound prominence attracted the attention of Iron Man, who uncovered his ruse and used the information to take on AIM.

After Killian and his cohorts were defeated, Slattery was arrested and sent to prison. However, it wasn't long until he was broken out of prison by the Ten Rings, who brought him to the Valley of Spirits. He was met by the real Mandarin, who berated him for his life of lies and proceeded to decapitate him.
