Early life
Tony Stark was born to up and coming industrialist Howard Stark and his wife Maria Stark. As a child, Tony, along with being gifted with prodigy-level intelligence, was frequently bullied at school due to his vast wealth, often being called a "spoiled trust-fund brat" by the other children. Howard signed his son up for several classes for self-defense, including taekwondo, judo, boxing, and karate.
Teenage Orphan
By the time Tony was 17, his parents had been killed in a car accident, forcing the Stark family's part-time butler, Edwin Jarvis, to go full time and serve as a father figure to Tony. Around this time, Tony also began taking several types of drugs, such as cocaine and marijuana, to help cope with his increasing depression over his parents' deaths. Edwin successfully enrolled Tony in rehab when he discovered this addiction.
CEO of Stark Industries
When Tony was 25, he was placed as the new CEO and owner of Stark Industries. However, with this position came many new challenges. Stockholder Obadiah Stane became increasingly jealous of Tony's success and popularity and began to secretly plot against him. Meanwhile, Pepper Potts, Tony's crush, became the secretary of the company and Tony's assistant.
Becoming Iron Man
While overseeing a military demonstration of his technology in an active war zone, Tony tripped a booby trap that killed his escort and lodged shrapnel in his chest. The gravely injured Stark was taken captive by the terrorist leader Wong-Chu, and was informed that within a week the shrapnel would penetrate his heart and kill him. Wong-Chu falsely promised Stark that if he built a powerful weapon, he would be allowed to undergo an operation to save his life. Even though Stark realized the tyrant was lying, he agreed, hoping to gain time and access to tools.
Stark was given access to a small laboratory with another captive, the renowned Asian physicist and Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Professor Ho Yinsen, whose work Stark admired in college. With Yinsen acting as his assistant, Stark designed and built an electrically powered suit of armor with a pacemaker-like device that enabled Stark's heart to keep beating, the armor was also equipped with heavy offensive weaponry.
Donning the suit, Stark connected it to its power source, an electrical generator. Lying on a table Stark was helpless until the suit was fully charged. In the least fortunate turn of events, Wong-Chu decided to check on his prisoners. Knowing that if they were found, all of their work would be for nothing, Yinsen decided to sacrifice his own life by distracting Wong-Chu, giving Stark the extra time he needed to charge the armored suit fully. As the Iron Man, Stark avenged Yinsen's death and scattered Wong-Chu's guerrilla troops. Then, still clad in his armor, which was necessary to keep his heart beating, Stark made his way toward the front lines, trying to escape enemy territory.
Tony eventually managed to return to the United States, where he decided to discontinue Stark Industries' weapons program, much to the anger of Stane. Tony then decided to improve on the Iron Man armor in order to build what he called his "last, and best, weapon". Initially malfunctioning, Tony managed to perfect the art of his jet boots and could successfully fly. He then improved upon his original armor's weapons and systems, eventually coming to a streamlined, metal armor. Initially colored chrome, Tony soon painted the armor with a crimson red and bright gold color.
First Bout
Taking the armor out on a stroll of the East Coast, Tony witnessed an illegal drug shipment going on in Brooklyn. Intervening, Tony began to stop several crimes all over New York. An overnight sensation, Tony's armor alter ego was given the name Iron Man by the press.
Philanthropist by Day and Night, Super Hero by Night and Day
Tony began to suffer the overwhelming stress of having a double life, both being a billionaire philanthropist and a crime fighting super hero, and as with any hero, a villain must also come along. Iron Man's earliest rivals included the Mandarin, Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, Fin Fang Foom, and occasional Spider-Man rouges Electro and Rhino.

Kaine's Request
Kaine, Spider-Man's corrupted clone seeking redemption, went to Avengers Tower in order to gain the team's assistance in getting back Mayday Parker, the infant daughter of Spider-Man himself, who had been kidnapped by con artist Allison Mongrain under the orders of Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin. Iron Man attacked Kaine under the false pretense that Kaine was an intruder. After explaining the situation, Iron Man gathered Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye to help rescue the child, as the rest of the Avengers were out of town for the time being.
Arriving in Paris from a tip given to Kaine by one of Osborn's lackeys, Iron Man, Kaine, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye were besieged by the Brotherhood of the Scrier, who were also working for Osborn and had the child. After Iron Man snatched the baby from one of the Scriers, the four made their way back to the Quinjet and returned home. Upon arriving at Avengers Tower, Kaine thanked Stark for his aid in retrieving the baby.
