Early Life

Tommy Orlando Wilson or by his real name Tommy Orlando Abioye Nwakaeme was born in San Diego, California, the youngest of four children. His mother, Darlene originated from New Orleans, Louisiana while his father Paul-Antoine Nwakaeme who immigrated to the United States from Nigeria thus making him and his older siblings, Sam, Sara, and Jahmaal of Yoruba descent. During his childhood while Sam began to serve in the army, Tommy begun a passion for dancing from being inspired by famous popstar, Janet Jackson whom he was a huge fan of, and his mother enrolled him in dance classes and gymnastics where he developed styles from hip-hop, modern, and traditional African dance. As he gotten older, he began to participate in many dance performances as well as gymnastics competitions winning many medals for his hard work as he sets his eyes on becoming part of the Olympics when he gets older, wanting to win more gold medals and have his name be chanted by the crowd.

The Birth of Thunderbird

By the time Tommy was in high school, he was in his senior year, he and his classmates were visiting University of New York City as part of the college tour. At the time, Sam was already part of the Avengers along with Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and others while Tommy was enjoying the life as an average teenager. However, the campus became endangered Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attacked, putting all of the students in danger including the visiting students of Tommy's high school. With the Avengers absent, the campus was left in danger, however, another famous superhero team, the X-Men came in to intervene against the Brotherhood. As the citizens prepared to evacuate, Tommy tried to make his escape but he was apprehended by Sabretooth, holding him hostage to stop the X-Men from attacking. However, Tommy began to feel an electrical surge through his body and his eyes began to glow white as he looked up in the sky that began to turn gray, lightning zapping across the dark sky, catching the evil mutant's attention.

Seconds later, a strong lightning bolt shot down from the clouds, hitting Sabertooth and electrocuting him, knocking him backwards, leaving Tommy and the X-Men, especially Storm shocked. The members of the Brotherhood, began to make their attack on Tommy but, the youngest Wilson shot powerful bolts of lightning at the evil mutants, knocking them out, forcing them to retreat, not before Magneto to look at Tommy before disappearing. Tommy was left in shock of what had happened, he decided to take a visit at his mother's laboratory where he tells her what had happened at his college tour and lightning bolts began shooting out of his body, short-circuiting the machinery, much to her shock, this promoted Darlene to draw blood from her youngest son and examine what was happening to him until she hit the mark, discovering that Tommy was born with the X-Gene and it had been fully developed at a late stage. In other words -- he was born a mutant like the members of the X-Men.

Rise to Heroism

After the reveal of his mutant heritage, Tommy decided to take some time to progress everything, knowing that this was all new to him despite part of him being ecstatic of having powers. While going to the corner store to get some snacks while hanging out with his friends, a group of robbers raided in the store, armed with AK-47 rifles, and inflicting panic within the customers that were inside, forcing them to cower away while the cashiers began to give them the money as they aimed their pistols at them to prevent them from committing murder. However, one of the robbers spotted Tommy peeking and he began to open fire at him, forcing the now-mutant to reach for cover. The other robbers took notice and they also opened fire as well. Screams were heard and Tommy cursed at himself for getting himself involved but swallowed his fear as he felt the electricity surge through his hands, knowing that he can use his new powers to fight against the robbers. He evaded the raining bullets as he found an open place to hide and he began to shoot his lightning bolts at one of the robbers, hitting him the the chest that sent him sliding across the floor. This left the youngest Wilson by surprise by how powerful his newly awakened his powers are and he turned to face the rest of the robbers who began shooting at him which Tommy zapped the guns out of their hands, forcing them to fight him unarmed.

Although having no experience in martial arts, Tommy used some of his dance and gymnastics skills to perform combat maneuvers and evasions to balance his combat with his powers and seem to have the upper hand, one robber catches Tommy off guard and punches him in the face, knocking him backwards. But that was one mistake the goon made when the mutant turned to him and his eyes began glowing once more, and lightning began flowing on his body. He soon shoots a massive barrage of lightning bolts, striking all of the robbers, and knocking them right out of the store. Once his eyes went back to normal, Tommy realized what he had done and everyone began to look at him in utter shock and he quickly ran out of the store, ignoring the cashiers' call for him to wait. Once he got home, he rushes into his room locking the door behind him as his mother became worried about him along with his father and Sara.

Tommy sat in his room for hours, thinking about what had happened at the bodega as his mutant powers start to fully surface, which began to take effect in the home, thanks to the lightning affecting the electronics. This prompted his mother in trying to help Tommy as he began to rethink about himself being a mutant. When he was asked what had happened and he explained the incident that happened in the bodega, remembering the robbers armed with their guns and the shocked looks on the witnesses' faces when they discovered him being a mutant. As he felt the fear getting the best of him, his mother just embraced him, letting him know that he didn't have to be afraid of everything and that being a mutant wasn't going to change the family. Tommy asks his mother on what he should do and how will he be able to cope with his new life as a mutant and she informs him that she has "tricks in her sleeve" but will help him the best way she can. Just as he and his mother finished talking, Sara finally made her way to Tommy's room and she told him that she had saw him on the news and the owner of the bodega talking about him, wanting to thank him for saving the store. Tommy tells her that it had happened so suddenly and those people were in danger and he was shocked that Sara nor his parents yelled at him for throwing himself into danger.

Sara informs him about him looking up to Sam due to him being an army veteran and an Avenger, how much he fought for the country and the planet from enemy soldiers as well as superpowered villains and evil aliens. Tommy asked her what was she trying to say and basically told him that when she saw him fight the robbers, she knew that he could use his powers to make a change in the world. In other words, she saw him becoming a hero just like Sam. At first, Tommy brushed it off, saying that he fought them because he didn't want the victims in the store to end up in body bags. Sara understood Tommy's rebuttal but she reminds him that he still has the chance to show Sam that he could be heroic just like him as he always said when he was a child. As Sara leaves, Tommy really began to think about what his mother and sister had said and when he turned on the T.V. in his room, the news showed the footage of him fighting the robbers, using his powers to thwart them. As the news and the witnesses still wanting to know who he is, Tommy began to realize that his powers could help save others from incidents and his fear began to diminish. From that day on, he chose to make a stand and start protecting other people from crimes as well as disasters that came and he revealed his decision to Sara, prompting her in helping him learn how to master his powers along with his mother who joined along the way.
