Thanos was always an outcast on his home planet of Titan, as the Deviant Gene resulted in him being born with purple skin and deformed features. The very sight of him drove his mother insane. As he grew older, the constant rejection he faced only fueled his desire for power and respect.
Following the near-extinction of the Titanian people, Thanos began building his reputation as an inter-galactic warlord, recruiting various soldiers and assassins into his society known as the Black Order. Together, they razed the galaxy in search of the Infinity Stones, only for Thanos to discover that his older brother, Eros, had gotten to them first.
Thanos tracked Eros to the Knowhere station and killed everyone there, claiming the Soul Stone for himself, trapping his brother in Soulworld. The Black Order then began their hunt for the rest of the Infinity Watch, facing much resistance from the heroes of Earth and even the Nova Corps and the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, their efforts were all for naught, as one by one Thanos continued to claim each Infinity Stone for himself.
Once he became imbued with the power of a God, the entire universe itself trembled before him. He began exterminating entire planets simply to demonstrate his power, but was quickly met with an all-out assault from every hero still able to draw breath. Many of them died during the battle. It was clear that Thanos was unbeatable, and now it was time for him to have some fun.
He didn't want to kill the heroes, he wanted to punish them for thinking they could stand against his might. While he left Tony Stark crippled, he converted others like Captains America and Marvel into serving as his devoted slaves. To add insult to injury, Thanos then set up his new castle on Earth, claiming the state of New York as his new home.

- Thanos has used the Infinity Stones to spy on alternate versions of himself, embarrassed that the majority of them seek only to impress Mistress Death. This version of Thanos seeks only power for himself to prove he is the greatest being of all time.
