Plot Summary[]

The late summer of 2007 arrives, Oscorp Industries became the second most famous and the second multinational company to ever dominate New York City, after its rival company, the Roxxon Oil Corporation suffered from a massive bankruptcy due to a tragedy revolving a massive oil spill in Lake Borgne, Louisiana. The company typically deals with experimental science, military research and cross-species genetics, whose reputation now rivals the world-famous Stark Industries. Oscorp's founder and current CEO, Norman Osborn revealed to the media the stories of how he and his science division got interested on trying to recreate their own version of the Super-Soldier Serum using only cross-species genetics. However, one little detail they didn't add was they have used various animals in their experiments, including spiders. One of the genetically altered spiders that were experimented by their own version of the serum, labelled "S.S. Experiment Arachnid No. 42," manages escape from its enclosure, escaping the laboratory altogether.

Meanwhile, many of New York City's top scientists are employed at Oscorp, from the highly-respected Otto Octavius to the unearthly Adrian Toomes. Toomes earned the nickname of the "Vulture" by Norman Osborn and his fellow employees for making a career out of refurbishing old or dying scientific advances in fresh, innovative ways, much to his annoyance since he thought it sounded accurate yet patronizing. One of Toomes' latest inventions is a winged exo-suit, something that he deemed would end up rivaling the technology of the Iron Man Armor if it gets funded. However, unable to create a battery or arc reactor powerful enough to run the suit, the prototype is only able to run on the wearer's vitals for a short amount of time. He suggested a collaboration with Stark Industries on his project, only to be flat out rejected by Oscorp's board of directors as Stark was their greatest competition, thus not letting their egos let it slide. Enraged by their prideful and stubborn decision, Toomes vowed to prove his genius and works' worth on his own terms.

Sixteen-year-old Peter Parker was a brilliant but socially inept and outcast of a student in Midtown School of Science and Technology. While in high school, Peter got bullied frequently by his fellow classmates, most notably Flash Thompson. Peter also met Harry Osborn, Norman's son, and the two became best friends and became friends with Harry's girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson. He also caught the eye of fellow classmate and one-sided crush, Gwen Stacy. While attending a field trip on a student tour of the Oscorp's genetics laboratory, Peter was bitten by the same genetically modified spider that just escaped its own containment, right after taking photos of Gwen — who had since been working at Oscorp as a lab assistant under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Otto Octavius after a year of internship — and while he was having the thought and consideration of asking her out for the homecoming dance at Midtown High by the upcoming fall.

Meanwhile, Peter starts gaining spider-like powers after getting bitten by the genetically modified spider. After arriving home, he lost his reliance on eyeglasses and nearly wrecks his bedroom and their bathroom with his super strength by accidentally breaking things. The next day, he humiliates Flash in a fight, resulting in his hand getting broken by Peter's super strength. Out of excitement, Peter goes to an abandoned shed after school, and uses his newfound powers to swing from chains hanging from the ceiling. He initially planned to participate in the career of professional wrestling under a masked identity, but he was rejected since they noticed how underaged the looked and sounded like, which he was.

Nevertheless, Peter got an idea from his failed attempt by modifying a new suit and using it to look out and help for people in need on the very moments he often witnessed Iron Man fly in the skies of Manhattan, watched the X-Men saving innocent lives on YouTube, and a television documentary of Captain America, encouraging him to be become a vigilante simply known as the Masked Marvel. In his first adventures, he got lucky his path as a hero to the point where he starts to show off (both as Peter and the Masked Marvel) and distance himself from his academics to his family in the subtle pursuit of fame and glory, only to realize that all that he's been dealing with petty crime, since he chooses not to deal with deadlier ones out of pride. Everything changed one night, when Peter was hanging out on a roof as he witnessed a group of armed men (secretly hired by Toomes) outside a Stark Industries facility. Peter got a call from his Aunt May but chose to follow the trail of the armed crew instead since he confidently believed that he could take them out and subtly hoped he'd gain public exposure. His attempt went south real fast, and Peter's lack of experience and hubris has only made the crew's heist be expose into the public. The robbers had gotten what they came for before escaping the arrival of the NYPD, and Peter couldn't be more dismayed by his failure.

When Peter returned home, he learned that one of the armed men who escaped had shot Uncle Ben in a street outside his school, revealing that his uncle had visited his school and convinced the principal to prevent him from getting expelled. While immensely grieving for the loss of his uncle with his aunt, this had unexpectedly made him get to know Gwen Stacy better when she sympathized and offered her condolences to him, who comforted with that it wasn't entirely his fault for not knowing what would've happen to him, relating his tragedy with her late father. Feeling guilty over his inaction and irresponsibility, which had led to the death of a loved one, Parker vowed that as long as he was capable, he would serve and protect others from, no matter how little or great it may be. Leaving the Masked Marvel brand in his path to maturity and dedication to redeem himself and atone for his mistakes, Peter went to improve his costume and even engineered his own web-shooters to start anew as Spider-Man, in which he finally started dealing with any crime he could find in his friendly neighborhood of New York City as he reminisces of what his late Uncle Ben had usually taught him ever since he was a child, "with great power comes great responsibility". As Peter Parker, he took a part-time job at the Daily Bugle working as a web designer after applying to be a freelance photographer.

Meanwhile back in Oscorp, Toomes was only minutes away from completing his wings pass the prototype stage, only for Osborn to find out the former was the one who hired the armed crew, having to pay them a traceable portion of the company's money in exchange of stealing a container of arc reactors. Out of his utmost disappointment towards Toomes, he fired him, which only caused the mad inventor to finally snap out and reveal his insanity and denouncement against whatever Oscorp has become since it became competitive against Stark, threatening to unveil his secret. Despite this, Toomes was forced to pack up his stuff and leave the tower, but not before he had one of his trusted subordinate Phineas Mason to deliver him his inventions once he left, knowing it would end up becoming confiscated by his superiors and be discredited for any of his profound works. Seeing no other hopes of getting his reputation at Oscorp, Toomes pledges to bring them down with him with the grim intention of using his newly developed wings.

Going through some of Toomes' unethical works before it was set to be classified information, Gwen was one of the only staff who persistently became suspicious of Toomes and Mason's collaboration since the former was fired from Oscorp. In those same days when he was operating as Spider-Man, Peter would also trace and discover through various interrogations and investigations that the armed men who broke in a Stark Industries facility all roots back to Oscorp. It didn't last long when one day, Peter tried to infiltrate Oscorp as an intern, which led to him crossing paths with Gwen, who was also close into finding out what Toomes had been up to. This incident that almost got both of them caught prompted Peter into revealing his secret identity to Gwen. This also made Gwen reveal her ulterior motive to Peter that her work at Oscorp wasn't entirely because of her passion for science. While she loved to pursue chemistry, the death of her father during an "accident" at a now abandoned Oscorp laboratory led her into a vindictive path for justice which most of her family thought were obsession due to Gwen not handling her father's passing well. Nevertheless, Gwen believed that Oscorp may have had something to do with his death, and they're simply covering it up. While Peter was somewhat skeptical of Gwen's sentiments, he encouraged that they should focus more on Toomes and his works. However, as they lacked any further leads, the pair had to drop their investigation and return to a more normal life.

In the following few months, Peter had almost gotten his life back on track since the tragic passing of Uncle Ben, and he was encouraged to attend their upcoming homecoming when Aunt May encouraged and offered him to wear the suit and tie which his late uncle had bought for Peter been wanting to give for Christmas. Shortly afterwards, Peter mustered up his courage to ask Gwen out to go with him to the dance, since he still apparently hasn't done despite the times they spent together since they first talked to each other not too long ago, and the fact that they were worked together outside of school regarding the Toomes mystery. In spite of his awkward advances and unconsciously blushing face, Gwen smiled at his obviously flustered state before giving him the simple but sweet "sure," teasing Peter that it bothered him more to ask her out than tell her his alter-ego as Spider-Man. Thereby, Peter and Gwen's time together became a lot more fruitful as it blossomed into the next stage of romance. Back at the Oscorp Tower, Harry became upset when his father, who was busy dealing with the board of directors regarding Toomes' dismissal, told him he couldn't make it his homecoming dance as a guest speaker, bickering that he only cared about his work more than his only family left. Later that afternoon, a distraught Harry was abducted by a figure, revealing himself to be Adrian Toomes.

As that night, Peter was ready for the homecoming dance thanks to Aunt May's cheerful assistance and encouragement, but so was Toomes with his planned vendetta against Oscorp after kidnapping Harry among other important staff from Oscorp and taking down several Oscorp security, accompanied by the same crew he had hired earlier: notably includes the Tinkerer, the Shocker, the Stunner, and the Burglar, the very man responsible for Uncle Ben's death. Toomes, now wearing his winged harness, launched an assault at the Oscorp Tower, with the witnesses describing his demeaning appearance as a Vulture-like figure, as his crew secured and surrounded the place with hostages. As local news and media began to cover the ongoing chaos, Peter was alerted by his tingling spider-sense, warning him that the incident should be dealt with.

Finding out that Harry, who was taken hostage by the Vulture, as well as his father Norman and other people were in danger, Gwen valiantly helped and assisted Peter by getting into Oscorp to evacuate the people from the crew and rescue Harry, with Peter suiting up and confront the winged assailant at the tower. Spider-Man initially struggled fighting the Vulture when he seemed overwhelmed when his uncle's killer was there, but he was able to turn the tables until he finally got the upper hand to both defeat Toomes and save him once the winged suit's arc reactor was proven to be unstable. Toomes was apprehended by the authorities, but his claims and accusations on Oscorp hiding "thousands of secrets" and being a fraud left a mark on Spider-Man's mind, questioning whether or not Norman Osborn should be trusted as Gwen had previously suspected.

Despite feeling extremely exhausted after a long night of fighting the Vulture menace as Spider-Man and subsequently knocking down the rest of his crew for the authorities to apprehend, Peter immediately answered Aunt May's called when she contacted him, worried that the incident at the tower may have greatly affected their homecoming dance. Peter immediately swung and rushed back home, only to find out that his aunt was merely worried because of the incident. Peter apologized and the two lovingly embrace. The following day, Peter reunites with his friends, Harry and Mary Jane, and was able to a second chance with Gwen, whose tone and behavior hinted that she may be aware of Peter's secret life as the web-slinger but decided not to tell him just yet.

In the first post-credit scene, Tony Stark himself investigates the robbery on one of his facilities revolving the thievery of the arc reactors in one of his factories, clarifying that the ones Toomes have stolen were failed prototypes that was supposed to be decommissioned until it was used by Toomes. In the second post-credit scene, Toomes was visited on his secluded cell at Ravencroft Institute by a mysterious man in the shadows on behalf of his superior, who questioned him what how much he knows about Oscorp's secrets. In another scene, Norman Osborn is seen personally observing a footage of Peter being bitten by one of his genetically-engineered spiders and comparing it to a footage of Spider-Man's battle against the Vulture, presumably deducing the possibility that they're the same person.

Trivia[]

  • The Roxxon oil spill incident mentioned in the beginning was intended to set up the story of Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, which wouldn't be produced and release until the year 2017.
  • While Tony Stark was heavily featured in the main poster and some other promotional campaigns, he was only in the film for a little amount of time, being often seen in the news footage of his response towards the heist at the Stark facility, and its first post-credit scene.
  • Although Peter's iconic and traditional comic book origin story of becoming a wrestler was never depicted in this version, Spider-Man would encounter Crusher Hogan later in the film, in which Hogan was an impatient wrestler who tried to rob his own promoter, during the montages of his debut as Spider-Man.
