Spencer Smythe, Jr. had always struggled with his mental health growing up, becoming hospitalized on four separate occasions before even beginning High School. He was eventually diagnosed with a rare version of Schizophrenia, which the doctors didn't particularly know how to treat.
Spencer's father, being a scientist, took matters into his own hands. He began to develop an experimental exo-suit that would send neural signals to the brain, helping to stabilize activity. However, Spencer's boss, Norman Osborn saw the potential the suit had to be a weapon. After redesigning it after a Scorpion, due to the animal's natural place in the food chain as hunters of spiders, the suit was grafted onto Spencer's body.
The process drove him completely insane, leaving him susceptible to suggestions by Osborn, who convinced him his only purpose in life was to kill Spider-Man. After multiple failed attempts, the Scorpion ended up in the Raft Maximum Security Prison, only to later be broken out by Doctor Octopus, who recruited the Scorpion onto the Sinister Six, alongside the Rhino, Electro, Shocker, and Sandman. Together, the group attempted to assassinate Spider-Man, only for his identity as Peter Parker to be revealed to them during the fight.
Memories of Peter from Midtown High came flooding back to Scorpion's mind, partially restoring his personality as Spencer Smythe. Disgusted by what had become of him, he betrayed the Six and helped Spider-Man defeat them.
He would then briefly join Spider-Man's task force called the Web Warriors, who agreed to help him piece together his mind. But they would never get the chance, as a confrontation between the Web Warriors and the Serpent Society led to an explosion that Scorpion was caught right in the epicenter of.
But rather than perish in the fire, Scorpion was plucked from reality by the Silver Sentry, who placed him onto Team X.
Somewhat confused, but still eager to prove himself as a hero, Scorpion accepted his place on the team and accompanied them on several missions. It was with them that he finally started to feel like he had a purpose.
Eventually, the Team found themselves on a mission in a reality where the Alpha Flight Space Station had been taken over by the terrorist Scorpio, who had armed the entire thing to blow upon impact to the Earth's surface. After the Team was able to secure the explosives into the airlock, they realized that someone had to be inside in order to open it. While the others argued over who would be the one to sacrifice themselves, Spencer stepped in and closed the doors, delivering a speech to his teammates as they begged him not to, for they had each come to care for him deeply. But underneath his mask, Spencer Smythe smiled as he pulled the trigger, releasing the explosives into space. Although his suit protected him for a moment, it soon was crushed by the vacuum of space, claiming the Scorpion's life in the process.

- The Scorpion was recruited as a replacement for Wolverine. Following his death, he was replaced by Venom.
