History
Early Life
Scott Lang was born in Coral Gables, Florida. He turned to burglary when his occupation as an electronics expert failed to support his family. Apprehended, he served his prison sentence and was paroled after three years for good behavior. In prison, Lang furthered his study of electronics and was soon hired by Stark International to work in its design department.
Becoming Ant-Man
When his daughter Cassie became seriously ill, Lang decided to return to burglary as a final resort. He broke into the home of Dr. Henry Pym and stole his Ant-Man uniform and shrinking gas canisters. Garbed as Ant-Man, Lang broke into Cross Technological Enterprises and discovered that Dr. Erica Sondheim, the only person capable of helping his daughter, was being held prisoner. He rescued the doctor and was relieved when Sondheim was able to save the life of his beloved Cassie. Lang had intended to return the Ant-Man costume to Pym and turn himself in for its theft but Pym, aware of the use to which Lang had put the stolen goods, offered to let him keep them, provided he only use them to uphold the law.
Hero
Thomas Walker asked Scott to join The Avengers, but he declined and went into a bar where he found a drunk Johnny Storm being beaten up when he saved him and brought him back to the Baxter Building.
Joining the Fantastic Four
Reed Richards thanked him for helping Johnny and that he was welcome to stick around. Scott then saw Reed struggling with a Machine when he began to tinker with it and it began to work. Reed asked how he knew that as it was classed as Level 8 Science and Reed was only Level 7. Scott told Reed that he learned a lot of stuff in Prison and that he was a Level 8. Reed told Scott that they could use a mind like his on the team to which Scott saw as a invitation.
Member of the Fantastic Four
Scott was blessed by Hank Pym to use the Ant-Man mantle though it would be hard as someone else was using it also. Reed gave a Pym a Special Designed Ant-Man suit that could be used Underwater,Outer Space and in other dimensions.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Pym Particles Ant-Man is able to reduce himself to the size of an ant, approximately one-half inch in height, by means of a rare group of sub-atomic particles, the source of which is as yet unknown, which he is able to contain in magnetic-field "canisters" (the shape of the magnetic lines of force were made visible by the confined particles, whose concentration caused them to behave like a gas).
- These particles, whose wavelength is in the mental range when released, allow Ant-Man to will himself and other objects to reduce in size or enlarge. The mechanics involved having most of the mass of the nucleus of each affected atom convert into energetic particles which take up orbit around the nucleus - thus, although gravitons do not affect these particles, the mass of the original volume remains intact.
- This means a punch delivered by the half-inch high Ant-Man would feel like the blow of a normal-sized man. Ant-Man's reducing particle has no time limit to its potency.
- Lang has demonstrated the ability to change sizes without application of Pym particle gas.
