History

Origins

Robert Frank was born in 1918 to Doctor Emil Frank and Christine Coleman in St. Louis, Missouri.

At the age of ten, Robert and his father explored a jungle in Cameroon where he was bitten by a poisonous snake. Suddenly, a mongoose came out of the jungle and killed the snake. After being bitten, Bob felt pain and the poison rushing inside of him. Bob also started to lose blood from the snake bite, unknowingly triggering his mutant abilities. In order to save his son's life, Bob gave him blood from the mongoose, which was immune to cobra venom.

Robert and Emil later returned to New York City. During one of his physical education classes, Bob realized that he had superhuman speed.

Early Adventures as the Whizzer

In June of 1941, a man named Jennings, who was supposed to testify against a mobster named Silky Kirby in court a few days later, was injured from a gunshot and brought to Emil's office. Granno and his colleague Spike went to Emil's office and killed the doctor with a gunshot to the head and slit Jennings's throat. Bob later learned that his father had been murdered; witnesses told him that a man carrying a knife and gun matching Granno's description was present at the hospital earlier that day. Determined to get justice for his father, Bob found the home addresses of Kirby, Granno, and Spike through a phone book, went to their houses, subdued them, and brought them to the authorities with the weapons used in the murders of Emil and Jennings. During Granno's trial, he said that he was attacked by "some kind of whiz".

Next week, Bob learned news of several cases of people dying after wearing jewelry that was purchased from the Star Department Store. The bodies of the victims appeared to have decolorized skin. The N.Y.P.D. reported that the jewelry was said to have some kind of strange substance that killed whoever wore it. Bob went to the Star Department Store where he paid the owner, Paul Smythe, a visit. The owner claimed that he had no knowledge that the jewelry could kill people who wore it. Bob asked Smythe where he obtained his jewelry; Smythe refused to answer and pointed a gun at him as a man known as "Lens" entered the store and pointed a gun at Bob as well. Smythe and Lens revealed themselves to be Nazi spies who came to America to "purge it of its Semitic plague". Lens said that now that Bob knew about their secret operations, that he could not be allowed to live to tell the story. However, Bob quickly subdued the two Nazis and turned them into the authorities.

Later that month, Bob learned that Vic Rommdo, Big Sam, and Pedro Castello, three inmates from Tolegate Prison, had escaped due to a riot and were claiming responsibility for several armed robberies and murders, he decided to search the city for their whereabouts. However, before he could confront the three fugitives, his fellow superhero, the Destroyer, who was near the location of their next heist, was able to apprehend them and turn them into the authorities. It was later learned that Don Reiman, the warden of Tolegate, instigated the riots in order to lower the value of the land the prison is on because he discovered oil beneath it. Reiman was later brought into F.B.I. custody.

Bob decided to take some time off of his duties as a hero and watch a car race that included Jere Kennedy and Bill Williams. At the end of the race, the winner was Jere Kennedy. On his way out, he saw a mobster named Roscoe and two of his men threatening to kill Jere Kennedy. Bob intervened, stopping the mobsters, and dropped them off at the nearest police station.

Walter Jameson of the Daily Bugle began to refer to Bob as "the Whizzer"; subsequently, other press outlets also began to refer to Bob as the Whizzer.

Adventures with Other Heroes

Bob learned that several inmates from Tolegate Prison had been released and were on a crime spree. The press dubbed the group of criminals "the League of Petty Crime". The Whizzer rushed to confront the League who were already in the middle of a fight with the Destroyer. The Whizzer and the Destroyer worked together to defeat the criminals who told them that Warden Balew released them in return for joining his criminal organization. The Whizzer and the Destroyer went to the prison where they confronted the warden who told them that he was working for the Italian-based crime syndicate Maggia.

Bob learned from his friend from college, Robert Paine, who learned from his friend, Daily Bulletin reporter Allan Lewis, that a circus troupe lead by Fritz Tiboldt was a front of Nazi spies attempting to obtain a list of all the Jews in New York City to target them. The Whizzer joined his friend and the reporter, who were known as the Black Fox and the Phantom Bullet, outside of Tiboldt's circus tent. Although Paine and Lewis intended to subdue the Nazis together, the Whizzer quickly rushed in, disarmed the Nazis, and tied them up. After defeating Tiboldt and his cell, the Whizzer, Black Fox, and Phantom Bullet turned the spies into the F.B.I., where Agent Elizabeth Ross was among the agents who arrested the Nazis. In his next article, Lewis dubbed Tiboldt's cell as the "Circus of Crime".

In November of that year, Bob learned from the Phantom Bullet that Roscoe was to be released from prison due to his ties to some judges and some law enforcement officials. Roscoe's first intention was to target Dennis Burton, the local district attorney and Carl Burgess, Burton's assistant. Bob collected Lewis and attempted to save Burton and Burgess, but the two lawyers had already defeated Roscoe, as the two lawyers were the Laughing Mask and the Falcon respectively. Burton said that if he needed the Whizzer or the Phantom Bullet that he would "give them a call".

On the last week of November of 1941, Frank, Paine, and Lewis learned of the Hangman, a scientist who sold enhanced silk to various criminal organizations such as the Maggia and Legion of Despair and to Nazi spies such as the Circus of Crime and Eric von Himmel. The trio, now joined by the Challenger, decided to raid the Hangman's headquarters. The team defeated the Hangman, but not without the Whizzer getting burnt by the scientist's acid cannon.

America at War

After the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan the next day and Japan's German and Italian allies subsequently declared war on America.

Within a week of going to war with Germany, the Whizzer was checking up on Albert Jones, one of his patients. Later, Bob learned that a Nazi spy and puppet master called "Great Varda" was in New York City and planned to assassinate high ranking American government and military officials. Bob went to the Black Hat Club where he suspected that the spy may be. The Whizzer saw that another hero named Major Liberty was already fighting Great Varda and his life-sized puppets. Together, with the help from Paul Revere, who was summoned by Major Liberty, the two heroes fought the spy and his puppets and defeated him and learned from him that Mr. Thos, the owner of a radio station, had been conspiring with the Nazis. The Whizzer went to Thos' mansion, which was guarded by Frank Rone, a mutate, and defeated them both. F.B.I. agents Bruce Keller and Elizabeth Ross took Thos and Rone into custody.

One month later, the Whizzer learned of reports that a group of Nazi spies possessed American weapons during their attacks on American soil. It was also reported that a stockpile of military-grade weapons were stolen. The Whizzer deduced that the suppliers would be somewhere in New York City; he knew that a majority of the attacks were in Queens, so he decided to search that area, looking around and asking people what they've seen. Robert was lead to an abandoned building in Queens. When he arrived, he discovered that it was a hideout for Nazi spies stockpiling weapons. The Whizzer rushed in and disarmed the Nazis, defeating them, and bringing them and their leader, Herr Snupp, into F.B.I. custody. Agents Keller and Ross took the spies into custody. Robert joked that Ross could not stop "following him around." Ross laughingly, responded that she would see him again.

The next week, the S.S.R. had been officially formed by the U.S. government in response to the threat that the Nazis and Japanese posed. The Whizzer decided that he needed assistance fighting the Nazi threat. So, he approached some of his fellow superheroes, including Rockman and Captain Terror, to assist him in his pursuits against Nazi spies.

Invaders

In June of 1942, The Whizzer was recruited by President Roosevelt to join the newly formed Invaders, a team of superpowered individuals that were assembled in hopes of ending the war quicker. The team already consisted of Captain America, the Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner, and Miss America. At the time, New York City was under siege by the Super-Axis, which consisted of U-Man, Baron Blood, Lady Lotus, Master Man, and Warrior Woman. Lady Lotus entered the S.S.R. research facility and took control of some of the guards, making them steal American research in an attempt to deliver it to HYDRA, a Nazi research division. Other heroes such as Major Liberty, Vagabond, the Defender, and Rusty opted to assist Invaders in their fight. Additionally, the Kid Commandos, consisting of Bucky, Toro, Golden Girl, the Human Top, and Fred Davis, Jr., aided the Invaders. Realizing that she was outnumbered, Lady Lotus used her hypnotic powers too take control of the Kid Commandos and use them to attack the other heroes. The Whizzer was able to defeat Toro by fanning out his flames with his superhuman speed and knocking him unconscious afterwards. Next, the Whizzer faced the Human Top who proved to be a match for him. U-Man, Baron Blood, Master Man, and Warrior Woman had the upper hand in battle over the Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, and Major Liberty. However, the Super-Axis began to retreat, much to the confusion of the heroes. The Kid Commandos were free of Lady Lotus' control. The heroes had later learned that the Axis had stolen research regarding mutant, inhuman, and extraterrestrial individuals. Upon request, Major Liberty joined the Invaders after the battle, believing that he could do more for his country as part of the team.

Relocating to the West Coast

A month later, the Blazing Skull and Silver Scorpion were recruited for the Invaders after preventing an assassination attempt on President Roosevelt by the Battle-Axis. The Invaders' first mission with Blazing Skull, Silver Scorpion, and Major Liberty was to go to San Francisco to deal with a group of Japanese spies. Miss America, however, did not join the team for the mission, as the government believed that she would be of more use in the East Coast. A group of Japanese spies including Jakada Matsu, who was nicknamed Agent X by the U.S. government, was based in a secret base/aircraft carrier that was disguised as an island where the spy ring could oversee operations. Suoka lead the Japanese spy ring within the United States and was based in Agent X's secret base. Individuals, such as one nicknamed the Fang, Gojo, Captain Nokuru, an illusionist known as Mysto the Magician, and scientists Doctor Suki and Maso Katoro were based in San Francisco and plotted to establish a foothold for Japan in the city.

During their time in San Francisco, they encountered the Triad at a restaurant, who informed them that their boss had made contact with the Japanese spy nicknamed Baron Nushima, who had instructed them to assassinate Chinese ambassadors Chan and Liang, who were supposed to arrive in the city to negotiate with the Americans for support in their war against Japan. Meanwhile, some members of the Triad pulled a bazooka from a truck and shot it at the restaurant, but was caught by Whizzer and thrown back at them. They also learned from the Triad that some Japanese scientists planned to unleash a swarm of beetles that would kill many people in San Francisco when the ambassadors arrive. The Triad informed them that the operation would be in one week, which they waited for. One week later, the two ambassadors had arrived and Whizzer and Miss America waited at the airport to meet them. Meanwhile, also at the airport were the spies Captain Nokuru and Gojo were also present at the airport. When the ambassadors got close enough, the two spies dropped briefcases, opened them, releasing the beetles and fled. The Whizzer quickly reacted by grabbing some of the beetles and placing them on the two spies while keeping them from attacking the other people around including the ambassadors and Miss America by squashing the bugs. The two spies felt faint and were taken into custody by the airport security and the remaining bugs were caught and contained. The security and the ambassadors thanked the two heroes. Afterwards, Silver Scorpion and Major Liberty were sent to Mexico on the orders of the American government, at the request of the Mexican government, while Captain America, Human Torch, and Silver Scorpion were sent back to the East Coast and the Whizzer and Miss America were sent to Alaska.

War in Alaska

In July of that year, Whizzer and Miss America arrived in Alaska to support the war effort against Japan in the area. General Peters of the USMC, the commanding officer of American forces in the area, had identified the enemy commander only known as Khan, who had a medium-sized army established on American soil and had spies sent to the mainland United States and Canada. Decades later, two entities known as the Brothers, one representing the Marvel Universe and the other representing the DC Universe remembered each other's existences, causing the Marvel and DC universes to slowly merge. Then, the Brothers held a contest in which they would take several fighters from their respective universes and the losing universe would be destroyed. In order to stop this, the Living Tribunal and DC's Spectre combined the two universes to create the Amalgam Universe, which combined characters, aspects, and events from both universes. During Amalgam, the Whizzer was combined with DC's Jay Garrick, the Golden Age Flash, to create Whiz, who was a member of the All-Star Winners Squadron, a combination of the All-Winners Squad and DC's All-Star Squadron. Whiz was teammates with Super-Soldier, a combination of Captain America and DC's Superman.

Notes

  • Jay Klaitz, the actor who played the Whizzer in the Jessica Jones Netflix series, was used as the face for this version of the Whizzer. I tried to use the actor and put him in a more comic accurate costume and more comic accurate setting.
  • The background is a picture of rural South Korea from Bing. The helmet is a vintage Harley Davidson helmet that I painted, and the Whizzer's suit was inspired by that of CW's Jay Garrick. If anybody can give me a picture with a better Whizzer costume, I'd actually like that.
  • The Whizzer's mother is never mentioned in the comics. The Whizzer's mother, Christine Coleman, is loosely named after the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Jessica Jones actress, Krysten Ritter, and Robert Coleman, the Whizzer in the Netflix Jessica Jones series.
  • This version of the Whizzer is mainly inspired by the Earth-616 version with small elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe version.
