Remy LeBeau was raised by his adoptive, emotionally manipulative family of thieves, who taught him to use his powers for his own self interest. He would eventually strike out on his own and become a master criminal and con artist.
After Apocalypse rose to power, Gambit saw no other option than to join his Armada. He didn't particularly want to rule the world, but he also didn't want to be executed or to fight a losing battle. Since joining, he has been forced to adapt to the sadistic lifestyle he chose, often working alongside psychotic and cold-blooded killers, like Carnage and Deadpool.
A few years later, when Cyclops decided to betray the Armada and join the X-Men for good, Gambit stood in his way during his rampage. Cyclops had intent to kill Mister Sinister, and Gambit felt honor bound to stop that from happening. The two engaged in a battle of energy blasts until they found themselves duking it out with fists. Each of them got several good blows in, but eventually Cyclops became more motivated and ended up snapping Gambit's neck to finish his mission.

- Gambit has a complicated relationship with the X-Man, Rogue. They are both attracted to each other, but Rogue refuses to have a relationship with a criminal, and Gambit refuses to leave Apocalypse to join the X-Men.
