Gambit

Early Years

Born around the end of 1979, the legendary mutant and reputable man who would become Remy Etienne LeBeau was abandoned at birth by his single mother due to his burning red eyes, although it didn't last until the weepy and innocent newborn was kidnapped from his hospital ward by members of the New Orleans branch of the Thieves Guild who prophetically revered the child as "Le Diable Blanc," translated as the White Devil. The faction believed he was the child that had been prophesied to unite the warring Guilds. Soon after, Remy was placed in the care of the notorious Thief Guild patriarch Jean-Luc LeBeau, who raised the child and casually taught him the ways of thievery. Jean-Luc took the boy and adopted him into his own wealthy family, who became one of the richest families in New Orleans whose wealth simply rooted from either stealing from wealthy criminals or gambling with morally-corrupt figures who occasionally visit New Orleans or any neighboring states wherein the Guild has established a base of operations.

As part of a major peace pact between the Thieves’ Guild and their rivals, the Assassins' Guild, a marriage of convivence was arranged between the now young adult Remy and his then-lover Bella Donna Boudreaux, the granddaughter of the head of the Assassins Guild. However, Bella Donna's brother Julien objected to the marriage and challenged Gambit to a duel. Remy killed the morbidly hostile Julien out of self-defense with his own mutant powers which he exposed to the Assassins Guild. The incident may have only fueled the Assassins' hatred for the Thieves due to Remy's nature as a mutant, but the incident has strengthened the reputation of his father Jean-Luc as succeeding lord of the Thieves Guild, the title of the guild's highest leader. Moreover, Jean-Luc couldn't be prouder of his son and encourage him to cheer up, despite Remy's conscience feeling otherwise.

While the Thieves were eager on waging a cold war against the Assassins since the pact was broken, Remy's guilt initially worsens especially after he was appointed by his father to lead his own group of thieves in the most populous cities of New Orleans, wherein the Guild eventually started earning clients from a myriad of different organizations, including the supremacist Brotherhood of Mutants, who have first heard of the Remy's powers being exposed to some public witnesses. From time to time, the Brotherhood kept an eye on Remy and has attempted to recruit him into their ranks, only for the Thieve prince to since he didn't want to get involved with another turf war, or worse, start another. Eventually, Remy couldn't handle both the pressure of being a leader, rendering him to instinctively escape his duties by running away from his family, from the Thieves Guilds, and from New Orleans and tried venturing for a new purpose now that he's alone and free from what anyone expects him to be.

Sinister Partnership

Now on the run from his guild, the young Remy wandered the country and he even got the chance to travel the world once or twice as he utilized his skills as a master and eventually a professional thief, aided by his mutant power to charge objects with explosive energy, to his own advantage in order to survive and live comfortably even without the reliance of his wealthy foster family. He employed playing cards he charged with kinetic energy as his trademark weapon which he often use in combat and his hypnotic charm as a convenient means to escape imprisonment. As almost a year has passed since he left the guild, Remy's fearless reputation had undoubtedly preceded him, earning him the notorious moniker of Gambit, an infamous name which even reached the Thieves and Assassins Guild, especially back in the guild-guarded New Orleans.

Due to his growing eminence as Gambit, Remy was found and approached by the master geneticist Nathaniel Essex, who offered Remy help in controlling his powers. In the process, Sinister removed some of Remy's brain tissue to reduce his power to manageable levels. As a result, Remy was in the geneticist's debt, and Sinister subsequently charged the professional thief with assembling the team of mercenaries called the Marauders. Founding this covert team, Essex made them an offer for money and a chance to control their powers in exchange for suitable subjects that he could use in his experiments, which in the process would fund his project by initiating an exclusive collaboration with several criminal organizations across the mid and east coast states of the country. As the second-in-command of the Marauders, Remy and his team efficiently kidnapped more people from the streets to act as test subjects on Sinister's experiment on mutation for years, until one tense mission has changed it all. Eventually seen as a liability to Sinister's plans during a heist on a highly-secured S.H.I.E.L.D. laboratory, Remy was abandoned by the very man whom he thought he could fully trust, only for that trust to lead him and most of his teammates into a trap that was the authorities in the form of S.H.I.E.L.D., wherein the Remy was detained and imprisoned at the prison facility located in the Triskelion. Despite his irresistible charisma, Remy's genuine trust towards anyone painfully waned overtime in his time at the Triskelion, and even later on.

Time at the Triskelion

For months, Remy was kept under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody in the Triskelion, wherein he easily made alliances and acquaintances with other detained mutants and mutates such as the nurturing precognitive Irene Adler and later the wholesome and optimistic Annie Carlyle, the very woman who would eventually grow up to be the X-Man Rogue, who covertly took a liking to her despite him acting overtly harsh and cold towards her every time they meet during meal times. The next week has passed, and what Irene had foreseen has come true. The facility was infiltrated by the Brotherhood of Mutants, whom Remy was unaware at the time had made a deal with his Thieves Guilds to free their self-exiled prince and heir from his unexpected confinement. During the break-in, the Brotherhood was led by Mystique as she secretly unlocked all the cells of the mutant wing, causing a messy havoc within the facility which distracted the guards from dealing with the mutant terrorists. Releasing their teammates, which revealed that Adler was one of them, and recruiting new ones among the prisoners. LeBeau sincerely gave Rogue the advice that she doesn't have to join them again if she doesn't want it, encouraging her to choose her own side instead of letting other chose it for her, reminding that it's her life anyways.

Before she could've responded, however, LeBeau left the prison on his own while there was still an opening for him. Moved by the thief's last words, Annie decided to stay within the confinements of her own cell, the Brotherhood that they don't want to harm or kill anyone for her own sake, be it humans or fellow mutants. Despite his disappearance for a few years, Remy was nevertheless forgive and welcomed by his father back into the Guild when he sent some of his men to retrieve the wandering Gambit as the latter took a step into New Orleans. This time, Jean-Luc apologized to his son and respected his decision of not being a leader as he has yet to be ready in bearing such burdening responsibility into his shoulders. While Remy was appreciative of his father's humble decision, he still could not feel more patronized and objectified, thinking he was only brought back to help them with their ongoing conflict against the Assassins Guild due to his menacing image as Gambit. Deep inside, however, Remy's charm, skills, experience, and perseverance have been crucial traits that he was already responsible enough to lead the Guild, albeit not in the traditional manner which his father and the rest of his people had expected him to be. It was only unfortunate that a few of his fellow thieves had noticed it, and whenever they bring it up it tends to be frowned upon by the rest of the Guilds' elder higher-ups, notably his own father.

Thieving the X-Men

On a summer day during the 2000s, the reinstituted Gambit and the Thieves Guild had cross paths with the X-Men, especially Rogue, whom Remy had met for the second time. Upon their reunion Remy reluctantly lied that he ended his own thievery career, and was trying to start over a new life in his hometown, hoping that his encounter with the heroes would only last after that day. Throughout the day, Remy practically served as their "tour guide," which made this vacation of the younger X-Men even more interesting. Despite the sudden unexpectedly circumstances of their first meeting outside of imprisonment, Gambit and Rogue were attracted to each other throughout the night, though none of them immediately admitted to the strange feeling they were experiencing, and instead masqueraded their true lingering emotions through teases and banters as if they were both playing hard to get with one another throughout their trips across the city of New Orleans.

Gambit and Rogue's complicated more-than-just-friendly relationship had its miserable shakeups within one day, much thanks to both her inability to control her absorption power and his redundant charisma and deceptive dishonesty, which Annie had dealt with first-hand when she and the X-Men were abruptly ambushed by the Thieves Guild. Betrayed by someone who she thought she could trust, Rogue lost her calm, rendering her to lost control of her powers under the influence of her own rage. Unfortunate for her, Remy was able to swiftly knock her out with a small kinetic blast, carrying her unconscious body. The rest of the X-Men were too late to face the combat-savvy thieves and defend Rogue, having been overwhelmed by their sharp and keen adaptability to fight in the dark which led the X-Men into getting knocked down by Gambit's crew by the end of their initial encounter.

Once they were mostly knocked out, Rogue and the other found themselves inside a warehouse, surrounded by Remy and the Thieves, explaining that they were simply hired to capture them under the request of none other than the Brotherhood, in which Mystique revealed herself as a representative in a mission to recruit them into their supremacy so they could still be given a chance to be shown a better world for mutantkind. Expanding their methods to convince the X-Men, it was Mystique's companion Destiny who used her powers to "show" each and every one a grim future without the unity of all mutants: a future full of death, despair, darkness, and destruction of their own kind. Helpless and afraid under the influence of Destiny's convincing visions, the X-Men were on the verge of losing everything that they've fought for as fear drives them to question their purpose and effectivity as an X-Man. Hope was lost for Rogue and her teammates, until the unexpected has happened to them. Inside, Remy had a changed of heart, though he made the excuse that he simply weren't in favor of the Brotherhood's "creepy cultist prophetic shenanigans" instead of him admitting of the truth behind his reason for changing sides.

Thanks to Gambit's interference, the X-Men got enough help that they needed to turn the tides into their favor, with Gambit now helping the mutants fight both his own fellow thieves and the Brotherhood as a way to compensate his betrayal and deception to the young heroes, especially to Rogue, whom he tried to apologize to after escaping from the warehouse. Despite Remy's sincerity, Annie was truly broken by his unforgivable treachery, making her to ruthlessly refrain him from explaining further. Gambit was just as crushed in return, though he had no other choice but to respect her disheartening decision, himself believing that he deserved it. The X-Men stealthily left New Orleans riding their rented van, while a dejected Remy stares at Rogue inside the van until they left, simply awaiting his punishment at the hands of his own fellow thieves. On their way back to Westchester by the next night, Annie's severe downheartedness couldn't be more apparent due to her silence as her teammates tried to comfort and condole her unendurable sorrow, with Rogue herself bitterly hoping that she'd never see or hear from Remy ever again after knowing what kind of a person he really was, or at least she thought she did.

The Ultimate War

The Movement Alliance conducted a series of massive terrorist attacks all over the world different historical monuments, killing numerous people on the first day. Consequently, all the Movement's opposing adversaries, the heroes, were united into creating their own Ultimate Alliance, in order to stop and prevent the Movement from commencing its schemes upon world domination and unified evil sovereignty, before its too late. As the attacks all over the world have continued for days and then weeks, more and more casualties are sadly, starting to increase in numbers due to the extreme terrorism and serious devastation, continuously committed by the conflict between the Movement Alliance and its seemingly unstoppable forces against the combined forces heroes and anti-heroes of the world, the Ultimate Alliance, who are not stopping their fight against the villains until they find a way to make them pay for their irreversible actions and restore back peace in the entire world.

In the event, the infamous and notorious villain of the X-Men Mister Sinister, who happened to be Gambit's former employer and subsequent betrayer, would intentionally led most of Magneto's loyalists into causing wreak and destruction on the city of Novi Grad, in Sokovia, without having any orders from Magneto, which immediately has gotten the attention of the X-Men, who went at the scene to figure out the situation. Little did they know, this strategy was one of the first known steps of Essex's plan as he would later unleash a larger event along with some the Earth's most powerful and villainous leaders, leading the Great Superhuman Movement. Seeing the destructive incident in Sokovia unfold in the news, Remy was disheartened with guilt for being partly responsible in fueling Mister Sinister's agenda be set in motion while he was one of his Marauders in the past, feeling as if he's gambled the world for the sake of his own selfishness. Seeing how strange Magneto was acting in the incident, Remy eventually noticed that the Brotherhood leader was being framed by a metamorph. Starting an investigation to find out, Gambit crossed paths with Magneto's Brotherhood loyalists who initially attacked him since they knew his past with Sinister. Gambit defended himself, immediately showing his remorse for helping Essex in the past now that he knew what his actions had led to in the present, in which in turn had the real Magneto himself to consider recruiting the gambler if he was willing to redeem himself for his reckless decisions. Setting their grudges and differences aside, Gambit joined Magneto's Brotherhood, who later on willingly formed a momentary alliance with the the X-Men as each of the teams' core members along with Gambit planned how to take out and defeat Sinister's Brotherhood faction, one of the crucial perpetuators in forming the Movement.

In the end of Sinister's short-lived reign, the villain was eventually founded by the mutant alliance (both Magneto's Brotherhood and the X-Men) once again in Genosha, after a dying Archangel threw a tracker on him without him noticing it, earlier during their battle. In the end, all of Sinister's clones were killed mostly by Gambit's surprisingly overpowered acquaintance Rogue, someone whom Remy has not seen in a long time, and he as well was finally defeated after he was defenseless after being surrounded by the X-Men and the Brotherhood, who used all their mightiest strength and powers against him that subsequently disintegrated the villain in the process, killing Mister Sinister and ending his tyranny in several countries all over the world and the Ultimate War itself once and for all. In the wake of the final battle in Genosha against Sinister, Remy had the urge to come and approach his old "friend" Rogue, but knowing how the guild would react and respond to his act of participation in the war without their authorization, he fled the scene in a hurry, with only a few of the reunited X-Men and Brotherhood noticing his disappearance.

A Hopeful Reunion

After joining the heroes' cause in Ultimate War, Remy had a moment of clarity. For the first time in a while, he never thought of running away in fear for his life, but has decided to stand up to his family, for what he believed was right when he helped the mutant heroes against Sinister. The only unfortunate thing for him was as soon as he arrived at the LeBeau Manor, he was informed by his people that his father and several thieves were supposedly attacked by the Assassins Guild, leaving the ambitious senior thief Castillo Drake to take his place as the patriarch of the New Orleans Guild while Jean-Luc recovers. Initially helpless without the LeBeau family to back him up as Drake wen to deal with his recent treachery quite too malevolently, Gambit ran away from his own Guild once again, only this time had most of his fellow thieves eager to either catch or kill him (or both) under Drake's substitution. Running and hiding as long as he could while he investigates the deadly situation on his own, Gambit was able to make his way to New York a night later, an arrival that unexpectedly led him to be reunited with the X-Man Rogue, which interrupts her moment of self-reflection alone at a park somewhere in the city.

Finding his way to Rogue, she ironically finds out the tense situation that the former was being hunted by Thieves Guild society since he secretly helped out the X-Men against Mister Sinister's Movement, something that Annie was aware of but decided not to remember until that night, when she had to help out a troubled and wounded Gambit as they spent most of the time either anonymously hiding in a rented motel, or investigating why the Guild wanted to kill him since he only helped the X-Men and the Brotherhood. Upon the two's second incidental yet infatuating meeting, Gambit revealed that he was now capable of using his powers in such a way that the kinetic energy he had been harnessing and manipulating allowed him to physically touch Rogue without her powers being activated. While this revelation was not something they had ever expected in their lifetimes, the outcast Gambit confessed the truth that he was glad he had found someone who isn't after his head. Annie reciprocated the same thought, but her feelings were still the same the way she felt about him: hurt and betrayed. In a truth that she didn't want to open up, Annie truly missed Gambit, but their last encounter—combined with the unbearable trauma her she but mostly teammates had gone during Ultimate War—has diminished the chances for her to able to trust someone like him all over again. Despite their heartfelt reunion battling the Thieves Guild, Gambit has always been aware of his unforgettable consequences in the past, not denying the mischiefs and mishaps he had brought to her and her family. While he didn't ask for forgiveness, Gambit sincerely apologized to her once more after choosing to deal with the Guild out of her utmost protection.

Sensing his hidden guilt, Annie was nevertheless determined to help him one last time, as she grew to adore and appreciate him more because she gets to see more of his genuine side. The two continued to investigate and battle against Castillo Drake and the submissive Thieves Guild, discovering that his motives of taking out Remy was merely due to his personal prejudice against mutants ruining the guild's reputation since Ultimate War. As Drake was defeated and subsequently banished from the Guild by, Gambit was welcomed back into their ranks. To Gambit's surprise, he was enthusiastic into rejoining them, only to feel conflicted when he thought of Annie. Not wanting him to worry, Annie reassured him with a passionate and not-so-deadly kiss, simply hoping to him that they'd keep in touch despite their opposite worlds, before Gambit and the Guild fled and hid from the authorities in the meantime. Nearing the end of this misunderstood ordeal, Gambit finished his mission of clearing his name and giving justice to this father. Seeing how easily fragile and anarchic his society could be without any form of righteous leadership, Gambit listened to his family and took on the responsibility of taking the empty spot as the patriarch of New Orleans' Thieves Guild faction.

The Final Guild War

Only a year have passed since Gambit began leading the Thieves Guild, and while he excelled in keeping the guild as stable as his followers had expected, no one knew how brief his reign would last when the final war of the Crime Guilds have challenged his throne by the green-lighting of the Superhuman Registration Act across the country, with various branches of the Thieves even questioning the reality and the status quo of their society now that Gambit's status as an outlaw and a vigilante, who was practically defecting the Act, was jeopardizing their future. Knowing how much of his family would be in danger, Gambit met with former New Yorker thief turned fellow vigilante and superhero Black Cat along with the Defenders, whom he crossed paths with when the team were suddenly attacked by her former allies at the New York Guild, and together they have joined forces to get the LeBeau family out of the country.

Their attempt was mostly proven to be a success, only for the heroes to find out that the Guilds were hopelessly losing a war against the authorities, sponsored by none other than Wilson Fisk as he continued his secret long-term agenda of restoring New York's stability in his own image and through his criminally-discreet manner, especially after it was fractured and devastated during Ultimate War. In spite of this bloody ordeal, Gambit and his allies were successful in sending his family out of America to start their lives anew, at least most of them. In the climax of the war, Gambit led the Thieves as his comrades and the Assassins Guild went to join forces one last time, taking their last stand against the authorities. Despite how hard they tried to fight back to ensure their survival, the final Guild War nevertheless ended with their downfall at the hands of the police and every other enforcement sent to hunt them. From the moment the Thieves Guild were dismantled, Remy became alone and was on the run once again, leaving him with second thoughts whether he should've come with his family in leaving the country.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Homo Superior Physiology: Remy is a mutant who has the power to take the potential energy stored in an object and convert it to kinetic energy thus “charging” that item with explosive results. He prefers to charge smaller objects, such as his ever-present playing cards, as the time required to charge them is greatly reduced and they are much easier for him to throw. The only real limitation to this ability is the time required to charge the object. The larger it is the more time it takes. He can charge a rock as big as a small house in the matter of seconds. Most charging takes place through direct skin contact. The power of his explosions is dependent on the mass of the object he is charging, for example, a charged playing card explodes with the force of a grenade. Gambit can also use his powers to accelerate an object's kinetic energy instead of converting its potential energy, for example, he can charge his bo staff with enough power to level a house.

Trivia

  • Even as the lone professional thief and vigilante Gambit, Remy ended up becoming a millionaire. He has since donated half of his shares and profit to charities, most notably several orphanages as it reminded him of his past as someone who was adopted, believing that other people would need it more than he does.
  • Throughout most his life, only Annie Carlyle (Rogue) was the person (besides Remy's family) who completely restored Remy's trust and faith in humanity, redeeming him in his life of crime and freeing him from the guilt of his rebellious, complicated past by the moment he began opening up to her.
