Due to this were eventually killed by the government before they became took outspoken, and ironically only a year before it was dissolved. Due to this turn of events Piotr, his newly born sister Illyana, and his older brother by ten years, Mikhail, were taken in by their grandfather, Grigory. A local farmer, who was in fact a direct descendant of the famous Russian mystic, healer, and advisor to the last emperor of Russia, Grigori Rasputin. Making Piotr and his siblings the same. A thing their grandfather eventually informed them about, which gave them all even more pride in their Russian heritage. It also fueled Mikhail's sense of patriotism, leading him to join the new Russian Air Force, where unfortunately he lost his life in battle. Leaving it on Piotr to make sure their little sister was raised well, and their grandfather was looked after. A job that came much easier once he reached the age of thirteen, and his mutant powers manifested as he saved his sister from a runaway tractor.
After this occurred he started using his new abilities to help out the local community, no one afraid of him despite his mutant status. However what Piotr didn't know was that his good deeds had attracted some unwanted attention, in the form of local mobster, Anatol Spichkin. Who one day visited Piotr at his home to confirm he was indeed a mutant. Then once he did he offered to keep Piotr's secret and a job for him within his organization, which the young man refused. Then when he did Anatol showed his true colors and began threatening Piotr's family. That is until he and his underlings were stopped by none other than Magneto, who had tracked down the young Russian mutant to ask him to join his cause. Another offer Piotr refused. Yet just like with Anatol after he did Magneto took extreme measures and kidnapped the young man's remaining family, threatening to harm them if he didn't comply with his request. Thus with no other choice Piotr reluctantly became a member of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
From Terrorist To Hero[]
After being forced to join the Brotherhood Piotr found himself moving to their base of operations, where his family was also being held, the Mutant island nation of Genossha, which Magneto himself had founded. Where once there Piotr got to know not only the islands residence, but also his fellow Brotherhood members. In doing so the young man actually found himself sympathetic in regards to many of their experiences. Despite this he still couldn't condone the extreme methods they used to fight for Mutant rights. Instead the young Russian mutant found his thinking more in line with the Brotherhood greatest enemies the heroic X-Men. After Piotr reluctantly clashed with him several times over a period of years while as part of the Brotherhood. An organization he was finally released from in 2003, after it and the X-Men teamed up to free Magneto, and others, from the control of the ancient and powerful mutant known as Apocalypse.
Once the battle concluded Magneto informed Piotr he would release his family, and that the young man could make his own choices from now on. Taking that he went over to the X-Men and made a case to join them. Though many of them were suspicious of Piotr sudden change. Despite this he was allowed to join by Professor X, and after being vouched for by Katherine Pryde, who had been observing Piotr conduct on their battles over the years, and found him to much less violent and dismissive of civilian casualties than the other members of the Brotherhood. Thus Piotr went from terrorist to hero, and took on the codename Colosssus.
