History
I've lived and died—believe it or not—a life surrounded by heroes... None bigger or smaller than all of you. Since the day you joined, you're the same as anyone in the line of duty. Heroes.

Years into Agenthood
Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson was born on July 1964 with a father died when he was just 9 years old, as Phil couldn't remember him very well. At some time, he became agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and rose through the ranks of the agency as Director Nick Fury's right hand mbn, having been recruited by Fury himself while Phil was still in college due to his appreciation and obsession with the peacekeeping organization. Aside from his extensive S.H.I.E.L.D. knowledge, Coulson also grew up being a huge fan of the heroic super-soldier Captain America along with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s greatest assets and contributors, notably co-founder, former agent and director Peggy Carter, having passionately collected a set of vintage Captain America cards over the course of two years as among of the first things Coulson had purchased as a treat for himself during his first big payday while working in the agency.
Heading into a Brave New World
Since the early 2000s, Agent Coulson served as a primary operative in the Avengers Initiative after an encounter with the extraterrestrial Kree Empire that led to the surfacing of Kree Captain Marvel, under the guise the late N.A.S.A. scientist Dr. Phillip Lawson, and the human-Kree hybrid Ms. Marvel, the first codename of United States Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. Under Fury's directive, Coulson has agreed to keep the existence of Mar-Vell mostly off the record, as well as Danvers and her powers classified and stored in an archive by agents with only the highest clearance in exchange for the safekeeping of the cosmic Tesseract (Space Stone). As the Avengers Initiative would start showing potential under Fury's directorship mostly due to the unprecedented rise of superhumans in the 21st Century, Phil carried a significant role and momentous responsibility in the program, serving as one of the heads of the monitoring and recruitment of the individuals who were qualified or at least being considered to join the superhuman team from 2005 to 2010.
Some of his missions included encounters with Thor and the Asgardians after helping them deal with the threat of the Destroyer in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, as well as his attempts to recruit the genius billionaire Tony Stark, who had recently developed a miniaturized Arc Reactor to power up his armored suits and fight crime in them. While this phase in Coulson's life gave him access and privilege with meeting people with remarkable feats and extraordinary abilities, it also allowed him to mentor and befriend several agents within S.H.I.E.L.D., who eventually respected or even looked up to him. Some of his dear colleagues turned closest friends include Melinda May, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons, and Grant Ward.
During the Attack on the Helicarrier, Coulson was tragically killed by Loki after attempting to prevent his escape from their captivity. However, it was his death that motivated the founding members of the Avengers to band together and stop the Chitauri invasion as it escalated into the Battle of New York and Loki's defeat. On Fury's orders, the late Coulson was brought to the Guest House, a secret facility where he was brought back to life using treatments developed by Project T.A.H.I.T.I. But in order to keep him mentally stable, the process required wiping out the memories in his life that led to his death, modifying them in a way that allowed Coulson to recall his life without dying and being brought back to life once again. For a long while, Phil's memories were rewritten into believing that he was recovering in a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. medical facility in the remote island of Tahiti after being critically impaled by the Asgardian God of Mischief.
Coulson returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. to lead a new team to investigate and deal with cases in the wake of the Avengers' formation. Aside from recruiting May, Fitz, Simmons, and Ward, Coulson recruited the rogue yet altruistic hacktivist, Skye, whose real name would be revealed as Daisy Johnson. Eventually, Coulson ended up discovering that he had been killed and brought back to life through the T.A.H.I.T.I. Project, perhaps multiple times, sending him into a moment of disillusionment towards the very agency that he has devoted his life to for decades.
During the Hydra Uprising, despite the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the devastating betrayal of Grant Ward, he led his team against the forces of Hydra. He then led the charge in the final battle against their former friend being the Hydra mole John Garrett, resulting to Garrett and his faction's defeat. After the battle, Nick Fury appointed him the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., entrusting him to rebuild the organization from the ground up and mostly in secret. In mid-2015, Coulson's term would begin assisting the superteam of superheroes, nicknamed the Ultimate Alliance, from the shadows during the events of Ultimate War until the eventual reintroduction of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the public during the end of Norman Osborn's Siege as a means to expose Osborn's true villainous colors and finally overthrow him as the director of H.A.M.M.E.R., the phase of S.H.I.E.L.D. that ruled the United States with an iron fist for a year.
It was also during his time as director that Phil and his team would end up tracking down and confronting Ward and his Hydra faction, who sought to bring the society's true founder, Hive. Ward's attempt to bring from the distant planet of Maveth was almost thwarted by Phil during a heartbreaking confrontation that resulted in the former's demise at his own vengeful hands, especially for the many deaths that he had caused after showing his true allegiance to Hydra, including Coulson's love interest, General Rosalind Price of the Advanced Threat Containment Unit. Nevertheless, Grant was successful in allowing Hive's return by making his corpse as its host as he would take over Hydra once more. While Hive has proved itself to be a powerful and god-like Inhuman who amassed its own following of unhinged or mind-controlled Inhumans to join his radical crusade, S.H.I.E.L.D. and their covert Inhuman team, the Secret Warriors, would ally themselves with familiar faces that they've first met during Ultimate War: the Inhuman Royal Family. This helped change the tide in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s favor as their combined might and sacrifices would successfully vanquish Hive and prevent his plan to transform most of life on Earth into Inhumans.
A Sacrifice for a Second Chance

In the aftermath of Sentinels Uprising, Coulson was reborn in a synthezoid body in order to live for and with his loved ones once again
Even as he prospered being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson had plans of passing the torch of leadership in the agency to those who are more passionate and had better vision of it for the next generations to come. Coulson's consideration of stepping down first came to mind when he became trusted, efficient, and respectable co-directors with General Jeffrey Mace, who later heroically sacrificed himself to save the unwilling subjects and captives of Mr. Sinister during X-t(In)ction Event.
In the following months, during the determining battle of the Sentinels Uprising, a weakened Major Bastion tried to take over the Master Mold and self-destruct the Sentinels all over the country, Coulson himself was determined to make the sacrifice and blow up the main Sentinel X facility in order to shut down the Sentinel swarm and stop them from blowing up across the country, allowing the rest of the heroes to confront the other masterminds of the country-wide mutantphobic assault: Reverend Stryker and President Larry Trask.
Convinced that he didn't have to sacrifice his life after listening to his closest team—his family, Coulson's consciousness survived after being transferred into what remains of the nanites formerly belonging to the Master Mold before its great destruction, and was recovered into a Life Model Decoy body by Dr. Aaron Stack, a sentient android and old acquaintance that helped reprogram S.H.I.E.L.D. LMD program during its recovery from Hydra Uprising. He was humorously nicknamed by several agents the "Machine Man," although it was a codename already given to and used by Stack so Coulson had turned it down, especially after getting their obvious joke. In his new body, Phil was reinstated to be an independent director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but has also taken a break from his duties for a while to make the most of his "new" life with Melinda May, who accepted his "reincarnated" form while he used to have doubts about whether she'd still want to be with him.
Nevertheless, May remained loving and passionate towards Coulson even in his new incarnation as the two agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became promoted to a lifetime position in the organization where they could help and assist the successors of S.H.I.E.L.D. whether directly or from the sidelines. His successor would be his most trusted friend and daughter figure, Agent Daisy Johnson (aka Quake), as S.H.I.E.L.D. continued to dedicate themselves to maintaining peace, security, and freedom across the globe for all civilian lives.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
Cybernetic Physiology: Upon his resurrection under Project Tahiti, Coulson was administered with the GH.325 serum mainly derived from an unnamed deceased Kree scientist, which had the effect of successfully regenerating his eviscerated heart tissue. However, the use of this serum, along with other details of Coulson's resurrection, were kept secret from him for years. Eventually, the vital and climactic battle of the Sentinels Uprising has led to Coulson's consciousness being uploaded into the Master Mold's system with the intention of stopping the Sentinels, allowing Coulson to move and reform himself as the Master Mold's nanites and merge into a Life Model Decoy before he destroyed Master Mold from the inside. Compared to his biological body and limited cybernetic upgrades, Coulson's LMD physiology is superior than a normal human being.
