Petra Parker was an incredibly intelligent but socially inept Midtown High School student who lives with her aunt and uncle when her parents died under mysterious circumstances.
She grew up in Queens, New York City with her best friend, Harriet Osborn, while admiring from afar her next-door neighbor Matthew James "MJ" Watson, who she harbored a crush for ever since she was little. She also formed a close relationship with Norma Osborn, Harriet's overbearing mother who views Petra as more promising and impressive than her own daughter.
One day, Petra's class went on a field trip to Osborn Labs' science exhibit and while taking pictures of MJ, she was bitten by a genetically-altered spider, which was part of a Super Soldier experiment. She then flung it away and was immediately stomped by Felicia Thompson's best friend and 'bodyguard' Kelly "Kong" Harlan-McFarlane, in response to Felicia's disgust.
Petra soon develop spider-abilities, which she first used for personal gaining. But after her aunt was killed by a thief she could've stopped before, she learned that with great power comes great responsibility, a lesson that would become her motto in her life as a superhero as the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Girl, using her abilities to help those in need.
