History

Origin

Peter Parker was born to scientist Richard and Mary Parker in New York. However, they perished in a plane crash when Peter was an infant, and so was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in their home in Queens. Like his parents, Peter was gifted academically, particularly excelling in Mathematics, Science and Engineering. However, he wasn’t at strong socially and never had many friends until he attended Midtown High, where he befriended class whiz Gwen Stacy and rich loner Harry Osborn. Peter was also bullied fairly strongly in high school, notably by Flash Thompson, who was jealous of his intellect.

On a field trip to Roxxon Laboratories in his junior year, Peter was bitten by a spider which unbeknownst to him at the time had been exposed to radiation as part of Roxxon’s many attempts to create super-powered representatives of the company. Taken ill, Peter went home but soon discovered a host of powers given to him by the bite, including increased agility, speed and the ability to climb up walls. Peter lived in a poor household and so decided to use his powers financially, creating a red and blue costume and performing stunts and tricks to New York residents. Videos of his exploits gained viewers, which alerted Roxxon to his presence, who linked him back to their spider project. In order to gain this money, Peter began skipping school, and his new attitude gained the notice of Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the latter of which had a talk with Peter about his intelligence, and that “great power comes with great responsibility.”

On an evening out, Peter witnessed a man rob a store at gunpoint before fleeing. He had the chance to stop the criminal but decided not to act on it, claiming it wasn’t his problem. Returning home, Peter discovered to his shock that Ben had been shot trying to prevent a home invasion. Suiting up and tracking down the criminal, Peter realised that the gunman was the same man from the store and that he could have prevented Ben’s death. Swearing to avenge his uncle, Peter decided to use the lesson that Ben taught him, becoming the hero Spider-Man!

Year One

Peter’s first supervillain came in the form of Electro, another Roxxon experiment who was sent to eliminate Spider-Man. He also faced the Shocker and Rhino, using weaponry from the Tinkerer to cease Spider-Man stopping their crimes. With the assistance of Gwen, who he had now entered a relationship with, Peter also stopped the Vulture, who he uncovered to be Aunt May’s new romantic partner.

Green Goblin

Spider-Man later attended the scene of an explosion at Oscorp Industries, the business of Harry’s father Norman Osborn. Norman had been testing an experimental machine designed to make the user stronger, but it had backfired and destroyed the labs completely. Peter managed to rescue Norman from the fire but was unable to do the same for his wife Emily who tragically perished.

After the death of his mother, Harry grew sullen and depressed, drawing away from Peter and Gwen, while Norman was driven insane, partially by the experiment and partially from his wife’s death, and irrationally blamed Spider-Man, becoming driven to kill him. Using the Tinkerer’s drones, Norman uncovered the identity of Spider-Man, but even learning that Peter was a child didn’t stop him and he created the identity of the Green Goblin.

Spider-Man’s first experience with the Goblin arrived when Norman attacked Midtown High, using “pumpkin bombs” to destroy large portions of the school. Peter was more focused on saving students, including Flash Thompson, and so was nearly killed by Green Goblin, until the appearance of Harry caused a momentary clarity in Norman’s psyche, causing him to flee the scene.

Peter then learnt about Gwen’s home being attacked by Green Goblin and rushed to the scene but was too late to prevent her capture. Tracking Norman and Gwen down to the Brooklyn Bridge, the hero and villain fought, and Spider-Man ended up winning. However, Norman was not done yet, and he plunged Gwen off of the bridge and then fell after her. Peter desperately used his web-shooter to try and save Gwen, but tragically, her neck snapped, and she died in Peter arms. Norman fell into the water and his body was never recovered.

After the traumatic events of the Goblin’s attack, Harry moved to England and Peter abandoned the Spider-Man mantle, blaming himself for Gwen’s death.
