History

As my lolos and lolas have said it to me Kaptan knows how many times: Doing the right is what matters... Even if I have to stop my most of my dearest teammates—who just happened to choose being on the wrong side of history—and lose the first and only full-time job that I used to love because of it.

Early Years

Pearl Redondo Pangan (born May 1997) was a Filipina born and grew up by the beach on Mactan Island in Cebu. She displayed a strong affinity for water at an early age, becoming a swimmer full of promise and Olympic potential, of which her family had supported her aspirations. However, obstacles and a tragedy in life turned her aside from that path since the aftermath of the Movement, otherwise known as Ultimate War. Two years have passed, Pearl dropped out of college in order to support her family after the company of her mother's occupation had gone bankrupt due to the irreparable destruction brought by the Movement Alliance on its main branches in Metro Manila.

While working as a contractual worker at a fast-food chain in the neighboring city of Lapu-Lapu, Pearl was approached by a recruiter of a company known as AlonTek, who had learned of her after going through the records of her old high school's swim team. Promising her efforts would be paid with money enough to provide for her family more than her old part-time job, AlonTech made use of Pearl's swimming expertise for experiments, but unbeknownst to Pearl, AlonTech was a shady agency that was secretly being funded by secretive crime syndicates and associated with illicit activities and thus, they were eventually targeted by the Triumph Division, the first modern government-sanctioned Filipino team which recently formed at operated in the wake of the Movement.

Triumph Division

During the Division's assault on AlonTech Lab, Pearl was drenched in water from the experiment and exposed to energies of origin which even AlonTech had no full comprehension of, granting her the ability to control the water around her. Pearl tried to hold off the attackers with her burst of water blasts due to her instincts that they were villains, but was taken out due to her lack of experience compared to the superheroes, eventually learning where AlonTech really stood with the law as they were an international affiliate to the shadier scientific agencies, which includes Advanced Idea Mechanics and Roxxon. That same moment, Pearl knew she had to do the right thing and helped the Division against AlonTech by using her water blasts to destroy the very machine that triggered her powers in the first place.

Unfortunately, Pearl hasn't gained the trust of the superheroes, and it was Division's atmokinetic Anitun and speedster Great Mongoose who combined their powers to drain Pearl of her new powers until it seemed like she could no longer manifest them. Ruling out her powers as momentary, Pearl was no longer deemed a threat and was brought to her home, but was warned not to speak of what happened as the Triumph Division's government sponsors who managed to conceal the true details of the incident from the public and fabricate a more mundane yet "realistic" coverage for the news and media to report: an unfortunate accidental explosion that Pearl among other civilians were caught in before they were rescued by the Division. While looking at the bright side, Peral didn't feel betrayed that her powers were taken away from him as she was also guilty that she was enhanced by a criminally-funded group, yet she still knew deep inside that she could've helped more people, including her family and neighborhood, if it still remained within her.

Manifesting Her Heroics

Pearl's heroic spirit stood the test of time when one night nearby the mall Pearl was once again working in, the populated shores of Cebu City was unexpectedly rampaged by a colossal Kraken-like creature, which was painfully being sucked on by swarms of smaller, mysterious flying parasitic crustaceans as they only exacerbated the attacks. Considering that any hero has yet to arrive at the scene or no law enforcement was capable of handling the beast's havoc while people's lives were actively in danger, Pearl sprung into action trying to save as many civilians as she could right until she caught the attention itself. After many attempts of distracting the creatures, Pearl was abruptly flung into the nearby sea by the raging cephalopod after saving an injured civilian, not minding that it was a guy who used to bully her in high school. As the parasitic crustaceans began to latch on to Pearl's unconscious body slowly plummeting beneath the sea, witnesses initially believed she died falling into the sea from a great height.

However, Pearl started to feel sparks of energy resurging into her veins as she experienced them once, before the greatest memories of her family and her past experiences in the ocean had woken her up. Accumulating the seawater that was once drowning her, Pearl had subconsciously tapped into her powers once more and flew her way back into the scene of destruction by momentarily morphing into a water form her as she easily washes off the crustaceans back into the sea with her blasts and subsequently rescued the remaining civilians. Pearl faced the Kraken-like creature, only to find that she had a strange connection with aquatic life and reveal that it was behaving erratically due to the crustaceans' painful coercion. Rather than continue fighting the cephalopod, Pearl used her hydrokinetic powers to wash away into the safety of the deeper oceans, unaware that it would later be devoured by the Bakunawa, a monstrous serpent-like dragon that was once feared in Cebuano mythology.

While her momentary water form was mostly kept her unrevealed to the public, Pearl's selfless actions has led to her being hailed as a hero by locals, although panned by some members among the authorities who viewed her as a vigilante for staying anonymous. As a means to cool down the skepticism of law enforcement while also appealing to the media to give Pearl's heroics a more positive spin, it was the Triumph Division, represented by their leader Red Feather, who formally took Pearl into their group and apologized on the group's behalf as he pledged to helped her figure out how to use her new powers, becoming a superhero in training with the codename of her choice, Wave.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Supernatural Mutate Physiology: After drenching herself and swimming inside a sensory deprivation tank for a long period of time during her experiment with AlonTech, Pearl's genes were gradually altered having been exposed to a surge of mahika, the unified magical energy source of the Filipino gods and goddesses. This process granted Pearl with the ability to control any body of water within her vicinity. By gathering enough amount of water through her palms, Wave can utilize it as a means of offense by throwing it towards her enemies. With proper meditation and deeper concertation, Pearl could also tap into her connection with mahika and manifest the powers of countless water-based Filipino deities such as Magwayen (otherwise known as Aman Sinaya in Luzon), Amanikable, Saik, the Tubignon, the Hamorawan Lady, and Yumud. Pearl was already a remarkable swimmer since her childhood, even described to have Olympic potential, certifying the natural talent of her powers as it augmented her water blasts since the day she unleashed them.

Trivia

  • Ever since losing most of their livelihoods, friends and relatives after Ultimate War, a few members of Pearl's family had harbored anti-superhero sentiments as some heroes were notorious for being affiliated with military groups and authoritarian agencies, although their overgeneralized views were reasonably rooted from their personal experiences during haunting historical events, from World War II to the nigh-dictatorial regime of late former president Ferdinand Marcos.
    • For a time, even Pearl began to question her heroic identity and motivations with a similar mentality as her family, especially during her time as a member of the Triumph Division when the group found themselves unknowingly serving a kleptocratic government that kicked Wave and deemed her and sympathizers as fugitives for a time, reluctantly facing off against some of her teammates and friends.
    • She had since returned to the Triumph Division after helping expose and apprehend the involving parties, but she has admitted that her feud has given her trust issues, something that she eventually resolved with therapy and loving support from her loved ones.
  • Pearl came out as pansexual not too long after she first contemplated her feelings since discovering the free society of the Sirenas in the Lemurian territory of Sulu, mesmerized about how its residents can love who they love and was reminded how pre-colonial society in her country used to have no stigma against same-sex attraction.
    • Since 2025, Pearl began a passionate relationship with her teammate and good friend, Mira Somera (aka the avatar of the Filipina goddess Anitun Tabu), whom she used to have a rivalry with considering the latter attempted to drain her powers during their first encounter and that they had similar source of powers.
