History
You were the one who wanted to win, and I just wanted a sister! You were all I had, but you were the one "who needed to win." Thanos pulled my eye from my head, and my brain from my skull, and my arm from my body... because of you.

Early Years
Nebula (born 1988) was one of the last living native Luphomoids, hailed from the hellish, war-stricken regions of the planet Luphom. Taken as an toddler when Thanos came to her planet and slaughtered half the population, which included her family, Nebula was raised by her adoptive father Thanos to become a consummate warrior and killer which gave her a place in the ranks of Thanos' Black Order, her adoptive brothers and sisters. She was frequently pitted against her older adoptive sister Gamora in combat with expectations to make them each other's equals, but Gamora's determination to survive consistently resulted in Nebula's defeat, and with every failure she suffered from, Thanos would strip a piece of her body or organs away and replace it with machinery. This practice of hardening up the two sisters served Nebula to foster a deep seated hatred for Thanos as well as a long-lasting jealousy felt towards Gamora.
Search for the Orb
Nebula eventually became a useful asset for Thanos' schemes, and she and Gamora were both tasked with recovering the Orb of Morag, the artifact housing the Power Stone. To this end they were sent to collaborate with the power hungry Kree zealot and Accuser, Ronan, who had made a deal to trade the Orb of Morag in exchange for the annihilation of Xandar. When they received word that the Orb had fallen into the possession of a thief named Peter Quill and that Quill planned on selling the Orb on Xandar, Ronan volunteered Nebula to retrieve it. However, Gamora strongly insisted that she recover the Orb, stating that she knew Xandar better than Nebula. Though Nebula protested, Ronan agreed to send Gamora in her place.
Ronan was later contacted by the Other, who informed him that Gamora had been captured by the Nova Corps and sent to the Kyln with the Orb. Nebula and Ronan were then summoned to Sanctuary, where Ronan announced his grievances to the Mad Titan. Thanos threatened him with death if he failed to return with the Orb, prompting Nebula to urge Ronan into action. They arrived at the Kyln too late however, and learned that Gamora and some others had already escaped with the Orb. As the right-hand woman of Ronan the Accuser during the Battle of Xandar, she helped him fight the Guardians of the Galaxy for obtaining the the Power Stone, a skirmish that ended with Ronan's defeat and Nebula's escape from the scene, with the Guardians assembling the stone into the Orb and handing it in the best hands over to Nova for safekeeping.
Assassin On the Run
After fleeing the Battle of Xandar after a fight with Gamora, Nebula was soon captured by the Sovereign after attempting to steal some of their planet-fueling batteries, and handed back to the Guardians after a finished commission. After forgiving and helping her sister alongside the Guardians during their following adventures and subsequent battle against Ego the Living Planet, she tried to leave in a ship to pursue a revenge mission against Thanos, only to be caught in the radar of the Nova Corps several months later, around early 2015.
Nebula vs. Nova Corps
Encountering Richard Rider, who was only operating in the rank of Denarian at the time, he and his crew initially tracked down Nebula after believing her activities after Xandar was getting involved with the Luphomoid-based pirates known as the Slayers of Centurions which were hellbent on destroying Nova Empire and taking over the capital city during its then ongoing reconstruction post-Battle of Xandar. Putting up with Nova's cocky and humorous behavior yet deeply determined spirit, Nebula was forced to cooperate with him and his small crew in an undercover mission.
Together, they investigated the pirates' secret plans and activities, inevitably rendering the two to slowly open up to each other as if there was an unspoken thing between them, right until they reached the base of operations, wherein Nebula was baffled to find out that most of her family was still alive, not to mention her father Lieutenant Zorr. In the span of the infiltration, tensions grew when the Slayers almost persuaded Nebula into joining their crew. However, the confrontation ended with Nebula forcing to kill her father when she found out that the hostages the Slayers have abducted included innocent children. Defeating the head of the Slayers, Nebula saw what kind of man her father has turned into made him no better than her adoptive father Thanos.
Ravaging the Secret Invasion
Despite her heroic actions which prevented the Nova Empire's destruction, Nebula had to fake her death for the nth time — taking Rider's advice after Nova Empire conclusively couldn't pardon her for her crimes — before travelling to the outer, lawless regions of the galaxy. She decided to settle in the Sylloqonia, one of the only planets dedicated to pleasure and chaos without official legal constraints, in an attempt to hide from the law and lead a normal life in peace.
In the next two years of living and operating as a bounty hunter, Nebula would once again cross paths with the Ravager Captain Yondu and his clan, teaming up with them to help the Guardians in dealing with a planetary threat: the Skrull Empire's Secret Invasion of Earth. On that day, Nebula helped fight the Skrulls from the Earth's orbit until the surviving fleet submitted to the Earth's alliance of heroes on the planet. When the dust cleared, Nebula reconnected with her sister and was reunited with the rest of Guardians, meeting new members Captain Marvel and later Genis-Vell, the son of the late Kree superhero Major Marvel, whom Nebula had briefly met before his sacrifice ended the Skrull Empire's ultimate weapon that would've terraformed the Earth.
Threat of Thanos
Infinity Quest
In order to start his search for the Infinity Stones, the Mad Titan warlord Thanos and a portion of his starfleet mercilessly attacks Xandar as a part of his ultimate goal, almost decimating half of its population as he retrieves the Power Stone from the Nova Corps. Nebula rejoined the Guardians as they and the Yondu Ravager Clan answered the repetitive Xandarian distress calls sent by Denarian Rhomann Dey, due to first attacks of Thanos across the capital city of Xandar, to which they immediately responded by going to planet and helping the Nova Corps combat the massive fleet of Thanos. Despite the hard efforts of the Guardians and the Yondu Ravager Clan to stop Thanos and his forces' assault on the planet, Thanos was still proven to be the victor, and was already on his way to the next stone, much to the Guardians' dismay and horror. In their desperate attempt to avenge the Xandarian people, the Guardians and the Ravagers decided to being a search operation across the galactic communities in search for Thanos himself and his fleet in order to put an end to whatever he may be planning by then.
Thanos had ultimately triumphed over his enemies once he completed the Infinity Gauntlet, using this to finally complete his goal and destroy half of the life within the universe at the snap of his fingers. When Thanos eventually wiped out half of the universal population after completing the Infinity Gauntlet, most of the Guardians amongst the trillions of victims of his conquest. This ultimate universal Decimation has heavily devastated the remaining Guardians for losing a lot of their loved ones due to the heroes' ultimate defeat and failure. The only survivors among the Guardians were Nebula, Rocket Raccoon, and Noh-Varr.
Throughout the span of a year and five months trying to cope with their losses while operate as vigilantes even when half of all life was gone, Nebula got close with other surviving cosmic protectors, such as her notable ally Nova, whom she got sexually involved with. Despite Rider confessing that they had a mutual spark that was more than physical, Nebula coldly turned him down with the façade that she never felt anything romantic for him, albeit the truth lies within her deepest fears and sorrow of losing another loved one since her sister, something that Nova had sensed but decided to not to explore that broken part of Nebula. Nevertheless, Rider was hopeful that she would open up someday, even if he wouldn't be that person she opens up to.
Infinity War

Nebula wields the fully assembled Infinity Gauntlet, reversing Thanos' Decimation
However, Nebula and the remaining Guardians of the Galaxy eventually joined the alliance of the surviving heroes, antiheroes, and several redeemed villains battled Thanos, aided by the Cosmic Entities, in their goal to prevent the Titan's second universal goal of shredding all of cosmos to the smallest atom and rebuild it in his own image when Thanos knew how persistent the heroes were in finding him. In the process of the intense battle, he overlooked Nebula who, in her instinctively vengeful state, was able to wrest the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand. Her first act was to undo all that has occurred, which inadvertently freed the heroes and the cosmic entities and resurrected half the universe's population (those who were withered away into ash by the Titan's snap, the Decimation) back to life, including the rest of the Guardians themselves. The battle resumed with Nebula's excruciating pain, mixing emotions, failing circuits, and collapsing mind fueling her to finish off her weakened foster father and tormenter, but Adam Warlock intervened in time to save the agonizing Luphomoid and worn the Gauntlet after taking it from her, ending the cosmic conflict for the Infinity Gauntlet, for now.
Acknowledging Nebula's heart of heroism instead of berating her vengeful desire, Adam healed both her mental and physical wounds that would've been proven fatal if she kept on wearing and harnessing the stones' godly powers. Weakened and finally defeated after losing the Infinity Gauntlet against the heroes, Thanos consequently faked his own death after Warlock himself made it look like the Mad Titan has fallen, but he was actually teleported across the intergalactic community and chose to have himself exiled and secluded at a distant planet far across the galaxy, away from everything that he had accomplished, including his allies, and everyone had been against. In the aftermath of the war for the Infinity Stones, Nebula reunited with her teammates as she recovered from her wounds before they went on with their future endeavors and adventures across the galaxy, dealing with both the fruitful and fatal repercussions of their victory.
For some time, the Guardians have yet to learn of the truth, the painful but also hopeful truth that the Mad Titan has survived his ultimate fate, as Warlock had made it happen on purpose, believing that Thanos could still change his extremist ways and be a better being the universe would eventually appreciate, instead of fearing for so long. When Gamora eventually came to learn about this truth when she reluctantly teamed up with him as part of the Infinity Watch during the Infinity Crusade, she tried to suppress and not show her feelings of believing Thanos' capability to be redeemed. However, when Nebula has discovered Thanos' survival not soon afterwards, she couldn't hold her grudge against the very man who raised yet tormented her for years, but deep inside, she was still heartbroken and somewhat regretful by the fact that she saw and loved him as her own father.

Trivia
- Prior to making up with each other as caring sisters and supportive friends, Nebula stated that she hated Gamora the least out of all of their siblings. In relation to his other siblings in the Black Order, Nebula did have lasting rivalries with Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight, as well as a stern sibling relationship with Ebony Maw which she loathed.
- The relationship between Nebula and Nova in this universe is a loose counterpart on the latter's romance with Gamora in the mainstream Marvel universe. While Gamora and Nova did have an affair in this universe a year before the formation of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it was revealed to be merely to be an affair that went nowhere.
