Mortimer "Mort" Toynbee, also known as Toad, was a young mutant orphan from Detroit who was kicked out of his home at a young age. He became a criminal, using his mutant powers to carry out his crimes. He was visited in prison by Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutant Supremacy, but Mort refused to join them and was left behind. He was then taken in by Professor Xavier, and became a founding member of the X-Men.

- Superhuman Strength - Toad is extremely strong, primarily in his lower body. He also possesses superhuman strength in his upper body, but it is to a much lower degree.
- Superhuman Leaping - Toad's has the ability is to leap great heights and distances.
- Super Agility - Mort was born with superhuman agility and reflexes that are greater than most humans.
- Super-Long Tongue - Toad has the mutant ability to extend his tongue up to 30 feet in length so he can use it as a whip.
- Acidic Saliva - Mortimer has Acidic green saliva that can burn in to objects.
- Flexible Bone Structure - Toad's special bone structure gives him the ability him great flexibility.
- Amphibian Control - Toad the ability to communicate with and control amphibian life.
- Wall Crawling - Toad has the ability to climb up walls.
