Early Years[]
As her father, a soldier, died during the earliest days of the Vietnam War Monica Chang (born July, 1965) was raised solely by her mother Lisa Chang. Who was in fact a cryptographer and intelligence agent that worked for the National Security Agency. Leading her to have to travel for work. As such Monica spent many of her early years at various boarding schools. That is until she graduated from Stanford University with a PhD at only the age of eighteen, for Monica was born with both a photographic memory and gifted intellect. Taking note of this the CIA moved to recruit right after she graduated from college, and in the process of this Monica learned of her mother's true career. Leading the pair to start to reconcile their slightly strained relationship. Which only grew stronger as Monjca took the CIA up on their offer and began working for them. First as simply an analyst, but eventually she made the transition to field operative, where she succeeded in completing several high value missions, and formed a relationship with fellow CIA operative Everett Ross. Both professionally and personally until the two broke it off due to their work. In particular because Monica had accepted an offer to join S.H.I.E.L.D.
Agent Chang[]
After joining S.H.I.E.L.D. Monica quickly made a name for herself. She also became best friends with fellow agent Melinda May. Leading the two to work together often, becoming not only icons to other female agents within S.H.I.E.L.D. but also agents of Asian descent. Such as Jimmy Woo who May and Monica happened to recruit directly.
It was also during this time in S.H.I.E.L.D. Monica got into a serious relationship with Nicholas Fury Jr.. Whom she eventually married. However after seeing how high Fury career ambitions ran, and that it came second to their marriage, Monica decided to file for divorce. Despite this she and Fury remained close and maintained an amicable relationship. Especially since Monica, a few months after their divorce, gave birth to hers and Fury son, Julius Chang. Whom after having Monica decided to reduce the amount of field work and assignments she took. Since she didn't want Julius to grow up like she did.
With that her former father-in-law, and then director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nicholas Fury Sr., decided to help her out and made Monica S.H.I.E.L.D. inter-agency liaison, leading to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies around the world like Interpol, the CIA, and even the E.D.I. in relation to S.H.I.E.L.D. operations. Allowing her to stay close to home and her son.
Spook Once More[]
In the wake of the Hydra Uprising Monica, who happened to be taking some personal time to celebrate Julius' high school graduation immediately went to ground with her family, upon learning about the events that took place at the Triskelion. Shortly after which she met up with Fury Jr., who gave a full account of events, including the death of his father, how he had made Coulson S.H.I.E.L.D. new director, and how he was going to take the fight to Hydra. Respecting that Monica wished him lucked. She then opted to contact her old colleague Everett Ross and rejoin the C.I.A. Not only to gain its protection, but also so she could fight Hydra out in the open. Unlike many of her friends and former colleagues who were now doing so from the shadows. Due to this Chang found herself renewing her romantic relationship with Ross. Especially in the wake of the Ultimate Alliance War.
