Miles Morales grew up in the era of the reign of Apocalypse. As a teenager, he was bitten by a genetically modified spider by the geneticist Mister Sinister. He developed powers similar to that of the deceased vigilante Spider-Man.
Following the deaths of his parents in a raiding, Miles went on the run. He was eventually recruited by the Inhuman Quake into the covert ops group, the Secret Warriors. He initially wanted to become the new Spider-Man, but that title had already been taken by one of the Avengers. Instead, he opted to design his own black suit and dub himself "the Arachnid".
