Miles Morales was bitten by the same type of radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker, mere weeks before the Order of the World Tree launched their siege on the Earth.
During the initial battles, Miles felt a responsibility to join in the battles. He even briefly met Spider-Man while he was on his downward spiral into insanity after losing his family.
Miles eventually joined the rest of humanity in Latveria, where he was invited to join the Avengers by Captain America. He was hesitant to take up the Spider-Man mantle, but was encouraged to do so by Mary Jane Watson.
