Melrose Grant “Mel” Barnes is a former intern, trainee, and current employee for S.H.I.E.L.D. and associated with the Avengers from their formation up until their eventual dissolution. She is the biological daughter of former criminal and Avengers ally, Bucky Barnes, and an unnamed mother, who chose to keep her identity a secret following fears of being threatened by non-S.H.I.E.L.D affiliations. Her adoptive father is none other than Steve Rogers.
Melrose Grant Barnes was born on the winter solstice on December 21st, 1993 in a private neighborhood located somewhere in the outskirts of New York, to an unknown mother and her father Sergeant James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, a.k.a the Winter Soldier.
She was a happy child who aspired to be a hero like the Avengers she watched on the news growing up, and was heartbroken when her father disappeared from home when she was 8 years old. She spent years mourning and missing her father, as her mother struggled to raised her daughter as a single mother. Melrose promised herself she’d find her father and bring him back home, oblivious as his life as the Winter Soldier and his criminal activities, and when she was 10 years old snuck off from home, traveling the streets of New York City until fatefully bumping into an off-duty Steve Rogers. Rogers realized quickly by young Melrose's description that the man who she claimed was her father and who she was looking for — was his former best friend Bucky.
Melrose was then raised from that point on by Steve, and the rest of the Avengers, working on small missions and serving as a S.H.I.E.L.D intern — until a few months before her 25th birthday when she traveled to Wakanda to fight Thanos with the Avengers and finally reconciled with Bucky. Melrose was severely heartbroken and depressed by the results of the decimation, and five years later is still living with the Avengers in the New Avengers Facility.
- She is of American descent on her father's side, and Latin on her mother's side.
- Melrose's first name is said to be of Polynesian / Hawaiian origin and means "The Sweetest Flower". However, Webster Dictionary says it means “honey of roses, a mixture formerly used in gargles and lotions”.
- Her middle name is the same as her adoptive father Steve's, while her surname comes from her biological father Bucky's.
- She has traveled to every continent of the world, except for Antarctica.
