Someone had to protect Under York. You helped us before, but you don't live here. We can't ask you to defend us all the time.
- —Slinger
History
Matthew Vogel was a citizen of Under York. After Spider-Man's first exposition into the country, the people started revolting against Supreme Leader Carrick. Inspired by the hero, Matthew put on a costume, branded it with Spider-Man's logo, and went out to quell the chaos. Over the coming months, he joined with the rebellion, fighting with stolen blasters from government soldiers.
After Carrick tried to have Spidey assassinated, he returned to Under York with the Human Torch and his family. Vogel allowed them to experiment with his blasters, finding a way to disable all Carrick’s guns. With the soldiers' weapons inactive, the people helped the underground incapacitate the military. Carrick was ultimately defeated and his exiled daughter took over.
She reestablished Under York's open borders to the outside world. Spider-Man came back and setup a Parker Industries branch to help bring the country up to speed. He found Vogel and recruited him into Spider-Man Incorporated. As a thank you, he was provided upgraded gear, but he decided to keep using the same suit. After studying his new teammates, he decided to take the codename Slinger to better fit in.
