Matthew James Watson is a long-time friend and romantic partner of Spider-Girl.
He attends Midtown High School with Petra Parker, Glen Stacy, Harriet Osborn, and Les Allan. He was dating the high school cheerleader and mean girl, Felicia Thompson. Though originally known as "Matt" to his friends, he later picked up the "MJ" nickname.
MJ was one of the most good-looking and popular kids at school, having starred in multiple plays. Despite running with a clique of mostly upper-class, talented, arrogant, snobby, and self-absorbed students, MJ was more down-to-earth and kindhearted person. He was one of Petra's only classmates who didn't look down on her for her intelligence and even stood up for her whenever possible.
He lives with his parents and little brother Gary. However, he has a difficult home life due to his father being an alcoholic who took his frustrations on his family.
He was present when The Goblin attacked a festival in Time Square. After Spider-Girl saved him from a fatal fall, he develops a crush on his rescuer.
