Mary Read was an English pirate and a member of Hydra.
History[]
Little was known of Mary Read's early life. Her mother began dressing her up as a boy, claiming it was to pass her off as the son of another man. In reality, her mother was grooming her as a replacement for Mary's father. Mary would eventually kill her mother.
Afterwards, she joined Hydra. She joined Sam Burrington's crew posing as a boy, though her disguise fooled no one. She later betrayed him to Jack Rackham and joined his crew (though still loyal to Hydra) where she met Anne Bonny.
Sam would later get his revenge by arranging for Rackham's crew to be captured by the Royal Navy, resulting in Mary's arrest. Sam later learned that Mary was pregnant and suspected he might be the father. He decided to rescue Mary for the sake of their child but found she had already died giving birth to a son, James, who Sam would raise.
In the present day, Mary Read appeared in a virtual reality video game that AIM created based on Sam Burrington's memories. Her betrayal of Sam and allegiance to Hydra was omitted from the game.
