Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 is the first season of a 2013 television series by the same name, created by Marvel Television and 20th Century Fox Television on the FOX Network. It takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe focusing on the personalized adventures of the top secret spy & espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D. It is the first ever episodic product to take place in the continuity. It premiered September 24th 2013.

Production

The idea television series based on Marvel Comics properties had been discussed with 20th Century Fox as early as 2006. In 2009 popular comic book writer Jeph Loeb was announced to be spearheading the new Marvel Television company to try and develop potential series for FOX. Many pitches were thrown around but none reached anymore than the development stage. This all changed in summer of 2012 after the smash hit of The Avengers when Kevin Feige expressed interest in expanding the universe into television and absorbed the struggling Marvel Television into the much more successful Marvel Studios. Afterwards Feige, Loeb, and director Joss Whedon worked together to pitch an MCU TV show based around the adventures of S.H.I.E.L.D. An organization that appeared in the films often but was barely touched upon in a deeper way. At the 2012 comic con this news was announced and it was also revealed that Clark Gregg would be reprising his role as Agent Phil Coulson to star in the series.

More information slowly unveiled to the public such as Joss Whedon's younger brother Jed Whedon and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen would be the showrunners and that the series first arc would tackle the popular Iron Man story Extremis. Tancharoen announced afterwards that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would also acknowledge the events of the movies it overlaps with (Thor: The Dark World & Captain America: The Winter Soldier) but refused to explain just how it would work. Ming Na Wen in late 2012 was revealed to be cast as Agent Melinda May and Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward. This earned controversy as they were both original characters, but Whedon defended this decision but claiming S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't well known to the public and they have a very unique situation where they can creatively add a lot to the Marvel Universe where they normally wouldn't be able to. Coulson was an originally character back in Black Widow and Hawkeye, adding more for his team would just be building upon that. This trend ceased however when Chloe Bennet was casted as Daisy Johnson, a notorious S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent from the comics. Filming began in early 2013 and the first episode of the series aired September 24th 2013.

Journey Into Mystery

Aired September 24th 2013

The series starts by showing clips from The Avengers with Agent Phil Coulson narrating how the world has changed, none of them can go back, all they can do is their best, but sometimes their best is to start over. It then shows Coulson asleep on an operating table until suddenly awakening.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

In Los Angeles, Agent Grant Ward goes undercover into an office building where he busts a drug deal going down. Ward is able to incapacitate the dealers until the user suddenly begins glowing. Ward then evacuates all the civilians before jumping out the window, the entire floor blowing up shortly after. At the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Communications, Daisy Johnson is asked what S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for and she answers Strategic Homeland Intervention Espionage and Logistics Division. When asked what that means to her Daisy explains that they're the literal Shield between the world and the much weirder world, to protect people and keep them safe from the news they aren't ready to hear. It's then shown the person asking her questions was Agent Coulson who approves her application and tells her she's officially an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Daisy starts to celebrate and says how she never thought Coulson would be the one to approve her after, you know, dying. Coulson corrects her it was only eight seconds, all it took was a month in Tahiti to recover and get into the best shape of his life. Daisy asks why he hasn't told the Avengers yet and Coulson responds because he isn't any of their Supervising Officers.

Meanwhile, Gary Gilbert walks into a Diner and casually sits down at a table with Debra Mallen, his dealer. Gary tells her he needs another bottle of Extremis and Mallen claims he still owes her for his last hookup. Gary insists once his arm heals and he starts working at the factory again he can pay her double, that she knows he's good for it. Mallen reluctantly hands him an Extremis pill bottle before telling him to get lost. At the Treehouse S.H.I.E.L.D. Facility, Ward is arguing with his superior, Agent Maria Hill, to give him one more chance to take down the Extremis Cartel but she insists they've given him dozen of chances and it's time to bring in the big guns. She then introduces Ward to Agents Coulson and Johnson, whom he forces himself to shake hands with. Coulson asks for the details and Ward says FitzSimmons will bring them up to speed, leading him and Daisy to where Agents Leopold Fitz and Jennifer Simmons are both doing research. After they introduce themselves Daisy is surprised that they're two people and Fitz claims of course they are, he's Engineering and Simmons is Bio-chem.

Ward gets them back on topic and Simmons explains there's a new drug that going around called Extremis. Fitz adds on that it's designed in such a way to temporarily increase ones physical stats to superhuman levels, enhanced strength, speed, etc. Daisy asks what's so bad about that and Simmons explains its side effects aren't so charming. Extremis is highly addictive and causes bouts of aggressive, but worse of all continuous consumption overwhelms the nervous system and causes the user to... explode. Coulson takes note and insists they should get started then. Ward explains their last known activity has been in the greater Los Angeles area, but they've been progressively narrowing down dealers, including one by the name of Debra Mallen, they should start there. Coulson then asks if there's something he can do first and Ward angrily tells him of course. Downstairs, Coulson finds Agent Melinda May working in a cubicle and tells her that Extremis has been getting worse recently, that they could really use the "Cavalry" to help investigate. May insists she won't go back in the field but Coulson claims she doesn't have to get her hands dirty, she can just handle transport and recon, she's so good that he'll settle for just that. Though May doesn't say anything, she appears open to the idea.

Back in Los Angeles, Gary Gilbert takes out a pill and swallows it before walking into a factory. Once inside, he approaches the manager telling him how his arm's all healed up and he can start working together, do double shifts. The manager though claims he's already been replaced, there are no openings. Gary begs that he needs this money but the manager insists he should've thought about that before quitting because his back hurt. Gilbert starts to lash out in a fit of rage as he starts breaking equipment and throws the manager across the room, his veins and eyes both glowing orange after the display. It then cuts to Agent May driving a S.H.I.E.L.D. SUV across town while Johnson in the back looks into a mirror reciting what she'll say. Coulson asks if she's nervous and Daisy sarcastically tells him for her first field mission, not at all. Coulson assures her everyone's gotta start somewhere and then asks Ward if he's feeling nervous, who instead says that he's gone through war zones under heavy fire, he can handle this. May then spots Debra Mallen and drops Coulson, Daisy and Ward off to confront Debra. Coulson and Daisy walk up to her and introduce themselves and in response Mallen punches Daisy and begins running away. Coulson chases her until Mallen runs into Ward and he effortlessly detains her.

At the Treehouse, Mallen is taken into an Interrogation Room where Coulson, flanked by Agent Ward and Agent Johnson, tells her there are two ways they can do this, she can either tell S.H.I.E.L.D. everything she knows about the cartel, which will go a long way to help negotiate a plea bargain, or they can store her in the Raft and throw away the key. Mallen though just says she wants to see her lawyer. Coulson says that's not really their style, and since she wouldn't cooperate when he asked nicely, Agent Ward is going to ask not so nicely. Ward walks over and is prepared to smack her until Johnson yells for him to stop, horrified that they've going in for torture so quickly. Ward argues that lethal interrogation is the only way to get through to scumbags like this but Daisy insists only as a last resort. They keep arguing until Coulson interrupts them, ordering Ward to continue before taking Daisy outside. Out of the Interrogation Room Coulson warns her not to do that again, she asks to do what and Coulson explains undermining an Agent in front of a submissive. She hasn't earned that right yet and while people might be understanding now because she's a rookie, they won't be for much longer.

Daisy though defends herself claiming she joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect and serve people, not to follow stupid rules that make no sense. Coulson reminds her she is an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. that means she's part of something bigger than herself, and needs to put her own wants aside for the sake of the mission, they're only as strong as their weakest link. Agent Johnson bites her tongue and just tells him she understands. Back in the Interrogation Room, Agent Ward continues to torture Mallen until she finally confesses the name of one of her customers who's likely to blow up soon, Gary Gilbert. Ward leaves and then makes sure Coulson and Daisy got that as they then do research on the projection screens, finding out that Gilbert is wanted for assault at a factory he used to work at. Daisy speculates he's probably on the run then while Coulson adds on since airports have too much security and the police can track license plates there's only one place he'd be headed, Union Station. In the Lab, FitzSimmons are working together to map out the biological mechanisms that causes Extremis to explode until Coulson walks in and asks them how the antidote is going. Simmons says that after approximately two weeks of consistent usage Extremis is circulated through the blood stream, by the time his body will have flushed it out it'll already be too late.

Agent Coulson tells her to find a way to get it out quicker then but Fitz explains they'd need an advanced dialysis machine to remove it all in time. Coulson demands to know their second option and Fitz insists they blow his brains out, stop his body's metabolic processes completely. Coulson though claims they can't just kill everyone who gets addicted to this stuff, to keep looking for another way. It then shows Agent Ward in the next room setting up a Sniper rifle while Agent May warns him they're leaving in ten minutes. Ward asks her if she's seriously just going to drive them around and May responds wondering if he has a problem with that. Ward responds that he knows about her history and why she's so upset, but she's never going to get any better just hiding behind a wheel all day, May doesn't respond. At Union Station, Gary Gilbert is casually blending in with the crowd until S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives outside. They all start preparing to search the station and Coulson tells Agent Johnson that FitzSimmons are working on a non-lethal antidote to Gilbert's Extremis poisoning, but if they can't make it in time and worst comes to worst, can he trust her to do what needs to be done. Daisy tells him she's an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. of course she will. Coulson acknowledges he knows that it's hard, and there are a lot of things they do that he doesn't like either, but in order to make real change, they have to play by the rules.

The Agents all walk into Union Station until Coulson finds Gary Gilbert and quietly introduces himself as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Gilbert demands to know if he's under arrest and Coulson just says he's here to help and if he comes with him nobody needs to get hurt. Gary doesn't believe him, arguing he just wants to lock him up for trying to protect himself. As his veins begin turning orange the Agents all begin to attack him but Gilbert is able to subdue them all. Ward eventually manages to put him a chokehold and warns Gary that he's going to explode if they don't get him out of here and Gilbert yells back that maybe that's what he wants, throwing Ward off his back before breathing literal fire into a crowd of people. Back at the Treehouse, FitzSimmons are frantically working to develop an antidote until Fitz is able to create a special "Icer" Gun with bullets that shut down all nervous system functions without killing the target. Simmons tries to contact Agent Coulson and tell but he won't answer their pings, prompting them to decide to just drive down there and deliver it themselves. At Union Station again, Gary Gilbert continues fighting S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents until he's held up by Agent Johnson at gunpoint. Daisy says that she doesn't want to do this and Gary asks her why not, he's not out for this world. It used be enough to just be a good person but now there are Superheroes walking among them, and they're everyone's standard now, the only choice he has is to be like them!

Gary then starts to glow again and is about to explode and Daisy shuts her eyes, nearly pulling the trigger until she hears a gunshot. When she opens her eyes Gary is on the ground unconscious as a bullet in his head releases a stabilizer throughout his body that ceases all Extremis function, Daisy afterwards checking his pulse and seeing that he's still alive. The camera then pans out to reveal that Agent May had perched herself on the ledge above them, standing next to FitzSimmons, having shot Gilbert with their Icer at the last second. At the Triskelion, Director Nick Fury tells Agent Coulson he's impressed by well he seems to have adjusted after his near-death experience, but that this Extremis fiasco is still far from being over. Coulson humbly accepts his praise before claiming that he wants to lead his own Special Ops team, he's always gone at it alone but doesn't think that needs to be his style anymore. Fury asks who he had in mind and Coulson says his subordinate, Daisy Johnson, Ward, FitzSimmons, and Agent May. Nick insists they usually don't do stuff like that for field Agents, but in his case, he'll make an exception, give him an excuse to stay under the radar so the Avengers don't find out he's still alive. The death of a common ally does wonders for uniting a team, to which Coulson adds on in his case, bringing one together.

At the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hanger Bay, Agent Ward arrives only to see Agents May, Johnson, Fitz and Simmons waiting around wondering what's going on. They all speculate what it could be until Coulson comes out telling them they've all been selected to serve together on an elite team lead by yours truly. Daisy and FitzSimmons are excited about the opportunity until May sarcastically says how it's nice they get to all be the Brady Bunch but how is any of this going to work, how are they going to get around. Coulson though insists he's way ahead of her as a giant plane starts emerging through the Hanger. Fitz recognizes it as The Bus one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top tier Globemaster planes just under the Helicarrier and Coulson even informs May she'll actually be the one to drive it. Everyone then begins to get inside as Coulson follows behind, muttering under his breath, "It's good to be back".

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

At the Triskelion once again, Director Fury is with Maria Hill who says that Coulson seems really excited about his new assignment, observing that he really doesn't know. Fury insists that he can never know, as far as the official story is concerned he got stabbed and then revived by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top medical personnel, anything else is just gonna cause trouble.
