Maria Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, was a police officer living in New York City in the 1990s. When the mob boss Joseph "Hammerhead" Lorenzini found out that Maria was the one who stopped a recent drug delivery, he attacked her home when she was away, killing her two children and her husband, Frank. Maria swore revenge, and she went into hiding. She began a crusade to take down the criminals of the world as a ruthless gun-toting vigilante. Later on, she appears in the limited series Marvel Knights Unleashed.
