- For too long I have been on the wrong side of an unjust war... it is time for things to change.
- -- Mar-Vell
- -- Mar-Vell
Mar-Vell was once a dedicated member of the Kree military. However, he became tired of the constant fighting and opted to reserve his role to that of an Observer, which sent him to multiple planets across the galaxy to gather information.
He eventually found himself on the Earth, where he adopted the identity of Phillip Lawson, a scientist working for Project: Pegasus. He used this opportunity to look inward at the war between his race and the Skrulls, and came to realize that he was on the wrong side. He began splitting his time on Earth and traveling to Skrullos in an attempt to work out a treaty.
During his time on Skrullos, he fell in love with Princess Anelle, and went on to sire a child with her, that they hoped would be the key to ending the war. However, after Anelle's father, Emperor Dorrek, discovered this, she was banished. She died in childbirth, and left Mar-Vell with the child. He returned to Earth with the baby, and left him in the care of their confidant, R'Kel.
He returned to Project: Pegasus so that he could begin to sway the human governments to help him end the war. This led to him forming an alliance with a human fighter pilot named Carol Danvers, whose courage was unlike anyone he'd ever known.
It wasn't long until Mar-Vell's old war partner, Yon-Rogg, led the Starforce to the Earth to arrest Mar-Vell for treason. He teamed up with Carol to use one of their experimental fighter jets to engage in aerial battle with the Starforce Cruiser, but were then shot down and Carol discovered Mar-Vell's true heritage. He told her the truth about the Kree-Skrull War, but not before Yon-Rogg shot her and forced Mar-Vell to destroy the lightspeed engine, which imbued its energy into Carol.
Yon-Rogg convinced Mar-Vell the only way to save her was to bring her back to Hala, where he gave her a blood transfusion. However, unbeknownst to Mar-Vell, Yon-Rogg planned to brainwash her into joining Starforce. When he discovered the truth, he was imprisoned by Yon-Rogg to rot away. As the years passed, Carol regained her memory and freed Mar-Vell. He helped her escape from Hala, but in the process was assassinated by Yon-Rogg, who shot him in the chest with a blaster, blowing a hole right through him.
