Malekith was the ruler of the Dark Elves and the founder of the Order of the World Tree. However, after recruiting Surtur, he quickly had his position as the leader uprooted. Reluctantly, Malekith followed Surtur's orders, knowing he couldn't stand up to him.
Once the Order of the World Tree had brought Midgard to its knees, Malekith claimed ownership over the United States of America, and drove the Avengers and their allies out. Since then, he has grown bored with the war, simply due to his being passed over for the glory. He has secretly begun conspiring with Doctor Doom purely to add some entertainment into his life.
However, due to the secrecy of Malekith and Doom's alliance, his presence in Latveria was eventually perceived as a threat by the Avengers. Following a brief battle, it was the Invisible Woman who ended up impaling him with an invisible force field. With his dying words, he revealed that her husband was his partner, and laughed about the struggles their marriage was yet to face.
