History[]

Ancient Greece[]

Maehaerys was born in Sparta, in 458 BCE, to Kassandra, anf the deity Zeus. As such, Kassandra was left to raise Maltheus alone. As a baby, Kassandra brought Maltheus to the acting Pythia, who proclaimed that the child showed a lot of promise. At one point, Kassandra later met and married the Spartan general Niklaus who, despite Maltheus not being his own flesh and blood, raised him as one of his own. Owing to his lineage as being a grandson of Leonidas, great hopes were placed upon him to live up to the strength and valor of Leonidas. As such, Maltheus was trained to fight at a young age by Niklaus. While training in the woods near Sparta, Kassandra presented Maltheus with Leonidas' broken spear that he inherited as a heirloom. Since then, the spear never left Maltheus' side even in his sleep, with him telling his parents that he needed it "to fight the monsters in [his] dreams."Like other Spartan children, Maltheus also participated in the agoge, learning there about various things, including the Gortyn Code.

Exile From Sparta[]

When Maltheus was seven, the orical prophesied at the decree of the Cult of Malachai that Maltheus' younger brother, the baby Klaus, would bring about the fall of Sparta. In order to prevent this, Klaus was to be sacrificed at Mount Taygetos, despite Kassandra's pleas for Nikaus to stop it. As a priest was about to drop Klaus, Maltheus attempted to stop the sacrifice but instead pushed the priest and Klaus to their deaths. Maltheus was condemned as a traitor to Sparta by the ephors, who urged Niklaus to execute him immediately. Niklaus, being adherent to Spartan law, reluctantly complied and held Maltheus by his hand and dropped him down the mountain despite pleas from Kassandra. However, Maltheus survived the fall and escaped to the beach with the spear. Refusing to be found by the Spartans, Maltheus fled out to the open sea in a boat. A storm later turned Maltheus' boat overboard and he woke up on the beaches. There, he was found by the merchant who took him under his wing.

Slaying Chimera[]

Maltheus insisted on being the youth of Athens to be sacrificed to the monster as an annual tribute. He promised his father that if he were successful in killing the Chimera he would be able to return a god. Akasha, daughter of the King, fell in love with Maltheus and gave him a magic object; it led Maltheus to the Chimera, which he killed. He left Crete with Akasha taking her back to Sparta with the Chimera pelt over his shoulder. Shocked to see him still alive Niklaus killed himself out of guilt for thinking he had killed Maltheus.
