History

I'm doing what we've always done... We're going to fix this. Together.
Leo Fitz

Early Years

Doctor Leopold James "Leo" Fitz (born August 1987) was born in Aberdeen, Scotland to a single yet loving mother, after his father, Alistair, left him at the age of ten. Despite his socially awkward personality, Fitz's genius scientific mind and aptitude for engineering had given him the opportunity to enroll and attend the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology in the United States as early as 16 years old, wherein he became highly respected by his professors such as Franklin Hall, as well as he would face off with biochemist genius and fellow student, Jemma Simmons, as they were incidentally two of the youngest students who ever enrolled at the Academy. While they started off as intellectual rivals, they have grown inseparable as research partners and eventually, best friends. Working and bonding with Simmons for years which built their amicable and powerful duo known as "Fitz-Simmons," Fitz established his reputation as a professional engineer, having been remembered by his colleagues as one of the youngest and most prominent members of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sci-Tech Division. Thanks to their productive partnership, both Fitz and Simmons graduated from the academy three years by the 2000s, earning two PhDs along with Simmons, who graduated as the top student of her class.

Coulson's Team

Along with his best friend Simmons, Fitz would later be recruited into the team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, effectively bringing back the brilliance of Fitz-Simmons into a better and more altruistic use, and worked with them on all of their missions which were mostly in the field. While on the team as their gadgeteer, Fitz became friends with teammates Alphonso Mackenzie, Daisy "Skye" Johnson, and Grant Ward. With it, Fitz would develop a sister-like bantering bond with the seemingly cold yet dependable agent Melinda May. During Hydra's Uprising, Fitz helped the hunt for the rest of the sleeper and double agents which included John Garrett and Ward, after being exposed as parasites for S.H.I.E.L.D. since it was founded.

From the ashes of both Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. due to the final efforts of Captain America and his team to stop the launch of the former's Project Insight, Simmons stayed with the team to help the renovation of S.H.I.E.L.D. under the directorship of Coulson, as previous director Nick Fury had personally requested to the team before effectively leaving the agency to pursue his own mission to find the broken remnants of Hydra growing across the globe, which Fitz had secretly helped in tracking down the whereabouts of its de facto leaders as an act of gratitude, despite discovering that the climactic events of Hydra's uprising had left him suffering from brain damage when Ward had almost drowned him and Simmons into the Atlantic Ocean. As time progressed, Fitz's condition seemed to get better with help and support from his fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues rebuilding it under Coulson as their new director.

As the global Ultimate War was ignited by the sinister and destructive Movement Alliance had emerged around 2014 and was combatted by the heroic Ultimates, Fitz and the rest of Coulson's team dealt with an out of the world encounter with the Attilan Inhuman Royal Family on the Moon due to their encounter with the colonizing Skrulls, whose actions had led to the eventual exposure of the Inhumans across the world, something that they prioritized as their primary objective shortly after the catastrophic conflict. Within these years of becoming a lot closer with Jemma, Fitz would slowly and surely realize his feelings for Jemma as they would grow beyond their years of friendship, but has decided to sidelined them often, in spite of the many times they've faced and escaped death countless of times and Fitz's subtle actions to protect her during their missions as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Fitz would eventually confess his feelings around 2016, although Jemma herself would reject his advances — yet she never denied having any feelings for him — when she became Director Jeffrey Mace's main advisor in science and technology, much to Fitz's dismay as Jemma became more blunt and busier with her new duty for a while. Despite this heartbreaking reception that almost broke their friendship, Fitz tried to move on and continued supporting Jemma as one of his superiors as they continued to work in S.H.I.E.L.D. in its new incarnation, post-Civil War.

Feelings Returned

When S.H.I.E.L.D. encountered the return of the dark Inhuman deity-like figure, Hive, upon his return from interstellar banishment by an arcane Hydra faction and soon had to fight against his Inhuman army in the form of the Afterlife's and the Attilan Royal Family's Inhumans, which intended to transform all every human on Earth into Inhumans around mid-2017. Fitz-Simmons and the agency once again joined forces with the Inhuman Royal Family and Jiaying's group to find a cure to Hive's power of controlling Inhumans' minds, including their close friend and teammate Daisy Johnson who ended up becoming the Inhuman superhero Quake, before S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Inhuman alliance eventually managed to kill Hive, at the cost of casualties that included dozens of notable brainwashed Inhumans, who still fought to their last breath trying to snap out of Hive's coercion.

During the climatic finale of their war against Hive, Fitz risked his life in order to finish the cure alone as a way to protect Jemma from Hive's unstoppable carnage, much to her distress wherein she also realized how much he truly loves her more than as just her best friend due to his willingness to sacrifice his own self to protect her. Despite the deaths that Hive had caused among his coerced Inhumans, the rest of the scientists led by Simmons were able to mass-produce the cure and subsequently treat the Inhuman survivors in time, while Fitz recovered from his injuries inflicted by Hive. Shortly after returning in their normal lives, especially after Norman Osborn's Dark Reign who took over S.H.I.E.L.D. until his defeat in 2018, Simmons rekindled her friendship with Fitz and has decided to give their relationship another chance to take a higher step to the next level with dinner. Jemma gladly reciprocated her feelings for Fitz, who had always been by her side, with a passionate night. Fitz-Simmons started as rivals, which unknowingly developing into the best of friends, but little did they know that their blooming chemistry which endured through thick and thin, as if they have always been fated to be soulmates and lovers.

More than a Gadgeteer

As Jeffrey Mace's reappointment as the Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. continued under the true leadership of Phil Coulson around the spring of 2021, a year after the battle against Thanos had ended, Fitz worked with Dr. Holden Radcliffe on developing an Artificial Intelligence called Aida, which was designed to serve S.H.I.E.L.D. as the first decoy target. To Fitz's shock, Radcliffe betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D. and used both the Darkhold and Fitz's new technology in order to weaponize S.H.I.E.L.D.'s L.M.D.s against them after he was revealed to be an affiliate of A.I.M. and a consultant to one of its leaders, George Tarleton. Fitz was captured and his mind was connected to the virtual reality program called the Framework, wherein during its test run, his life and personality was rewritten as The Doctor, Aida's lover and Hydra's second-in-command, living in a world where his father was there as his advisor. After he created a machine for Aida transform herself into an Super-Inhuman in the real world, he was brought back by Jemma and a redeemed Radcliffe into the real world.

While Fitz left the Framework with the rest of his team in one piece, his ruthless and darker life — which caused the death and suffering of dozens of residents there, mainly towards Inhumans, mutants, and enhanced individuals — had left him traumatized. Shortly after, with the help of the Spirit of Vengeance through the Ghost Rider, Fitz and his allies defeated Aida, once and for all. However, while Aida's defeat was definite, her significant tweaks and contributions on the Framework with Radcliffe was proven to be beneficial for Tarleton in the following years as A.I.M.'s Scientist Supreme would successfully upgrade and expand the virtual reality network for his larger plans to conquer the country with futuristic yet deadly technology. In the meanwhile, it was the undying love, support, and assistance of Jemma and Fitz's teammates which helped him learn to forgive himself in time, during which a second chance came to his life when Fitz fathered a daughter named Alya, being the first out of two children he had together with Simmons before their son, Jed, would be born a year later. This fruitful realization of him finally having a family with Jemma only made him become reassured how grateful he was with the life he was living in now, being comfortable enough to raise their children despite having to face different threats each year, as they both knew their team was efficient enough to give their children a mostly normal life while Fitz-Simmons serve for peace as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Averting Dystopian Futures

In the following years of the late 2020s, Fitz-Simmons and the rest of the team were mysteriously pushed forward in time to an alternate dystopian future by Deke Shaw, an ally of the time-hopping mutant Cable and incidentally their descendant, who warned them about the temporal catastrophes known as a Chronic Convergence, consisting of two futures: one where most of life was eliminated by a futuristic virus into an inhabitable cosmic husk, and one where the Earth was destroyed by a destructive force before it was taken over by different alien empires to scavenge the remaining resources. While Fitz was skeptic that time couldn't be changed due to his well-versed knowledge of quantum physics, he was nevertheless convinced and motivated to try and find a way to save everyone in the present for the sake of his family.

With the help of Shaw and the rest of his crew, Clan Askani, the team were able to gather enough information on how they could prevent this future from coming to pass before returning to the present timeline around late 2025, wherein they came to join along with the Avengers International who were already dealing the villainous mind who would be causing it: A.I.M., to which Fitz-Simmons helped Hank Pym and his team against their former teacher turned A.I.M. leader Franklin Hall, who was responsible for destroying the Earth in one future due to his destructive use of the powerful element Gravitonium. Helping construct a matter-converter engine, the science team was able to contain Hall and the rest of the Gravitonium with Quake's help, before shooting him off to the Sun to be scorched off.

In the following year, wherein S.H.I.E.L.D. was revamped under Quake's directorship after Mace's resignation from the position, Fitz and the team had finally deduced that the second future they once traveled to — wherein most of life was eradicated by a virus — was finally enacted by Mister Sinister with his deadly techno-organic Legacy Virus. Thankfully, their trip with Clan Askani had given them sufficient data to help them create the cure for the artificial illness, which successfully averted the second apocalyptic, X-t(In)ction Event which they were foretold and saved the lives of innocent from infection, albeit at the cost of numerous people who risked their lives to ensure the completion of the cure, notably their senior scientist and good friend Curt Connors and former director Jeffrey Mace.
