As a young boy, Kevin Truman was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological condition. His parents, who were esteemed scientists, began experimenting on him to see if they could cure it. However, they inadvertently ended up empowering Kevin with the ability to command people's actions by emitting a virus with the sound of his voice.
He quickly drove his parents away after treating them like slaves, and he grew up to become a criminal mastermind always using his powers to get anything and everything he wanted. He named himself Kilgrave, and was only known through whispers among anyone unfortunate enough to cross him, but fortunate enough to survive.
He eventually met and became obsessed with the street vigilante Jessica Jones, because she was one of the first people he met to also have powers. He roped her in as his "girlfriend" and began psychically and physically assaulting her for an entire year. Eventually, she was able to break free from his control and toss him in front of a bus, which helped him fake his death.
He eventually resurfaced to wreak havoc on Jessica and her new business with the Heroes for Hire, particularly on her husband Luke Cage, and daughter, Danielle. The Heroes for Hire tried everything in their power to fight Kilgrave off without resorting to the extremes, but Jessica became fed up with Kilgrave's evil and took him on one on one, snapping his neck as he smiled at her.

- During his time with Jessica as his slave, he forced her to kill his own parents with her bare hands. He claimed he had "never been more in love with her".
- Whenever using his powers under great strain or on large masses of people, his veins and eyes flash purple.
