History

Quote1 My working theory is that we all got powers based off our personalities. Reed, I don't know, his brain was too big for his body so now he can stretch all over the place. Sue's always felt like the world doesn't really see her, so now they really can't see her. Ben, well, he was already ugly. Do I even need to go into detail about me? Quote2
-- Human Torch

Johnny is the second child of Franklin and Mary Storm. He is 8 years younger than his sister, Susan, and was in the car with her and their mother when they got in a car crash. Their mother was killed and Susan fell into a coma, but Johnny remained relatively unscathed.

However, he developed an obsession with cars and began dedicating most of his time to working in an auto shop. He never wanted anyone else to go through what he went through. However, his obsession drove a wedge between him and his father, although they weren't too close to begin with.

Years later, when Sue and Franklin began working together on a space flight project with a genius named Reed Richards, Johnny began to feel left out. Wanting to prove himself, Johnny volunteered himself for the mission and began working with the pilot, Ben Grimm, to train for entering space as a co-pilot.

During the expedition, the crew was caught in the middle of the cosmic storm. Their ship, the Marvel-1, crashed on Muir Island, where they all started to develop their new powers. Johnny discovered he had the ability to ignite himself on fire and control the flames with his mind.

Instantly becoming obsessed with his new abilities, Johnny dubbed himself the Human Torch and was the driving factor behind the others stepping forward into the spotlight as the Fantastic Four.
