History

Quote1 Spider-Man: Threat or Menace?! Quote2
J. Jonah Jameson

Early life

John Jonah Jameson was born to butcher shop owner Jay Jameson. As a child, Jonah was very interested in the media. At 16, he became a copy boy working for the local newspaper. At 18, he became publisher's assistant.

College dropout

In college, Jonah and a few of his friends dropped out for doing cocaine and heroin on-campus.

Daily Bugle

At 32, Jonah gained enough money from his father's butcher business to start up his own newspaper; The Daily Bugle. The Bugle would eventually become the most respected paper in Manhattan.

Spider-Man

Around 15 years after the foundation of the Bugle, the masked vigilante known as Spider-Man, among other heroes, marked his debut. Jonah, a xenophobic by nature, began to slander the hero, calling him a menace and a coward. However, Spider-Man would prove Jameson wrong on so many occasions.

The Scorpion

After a year of having Peter Parker, the alter ego of Spider-Man, delivering fantastic shots of the hero, Jameson began to become suspicious of the teenager's method of getting the shots. Hiring private eye Mac Gargan to spy on him, Gargan failed when Peter managed to evade him. Desperate, Jonah commissioned the creation of the Scorpion, using Gargan as the guinea pig. Gargan, as the Scorpion, would engage Spider-Man and defeat the hero with ease. However, Gargan soon went insane when his body began to mutate further. Spider-Man battled and finally defeated the Scorpion after a second round, who then warned Jonah to call off his smear campaign.
