John Grey was Professor Charlene Xavier's first mutant student and one of the founders of the original X-Men. He's in a relationship with team leader Summer Scott, aka Cyclops.
His telepathic and telekinetic powers first manifested as a child, when he witnessed the death of his best friend Andy Richardson. John's parents were approached by Xavier, who offered to help him. When he said to Xavier that his parents said that he thinks too much, she reassured him by telepathically saying that she does too.
His telepathic potential drew the attention of the Phoenix Force, an ancient cosmic entity which is the elemental force of life, creation, and destruction. John became its human host after it merges with his consciousness, granted him immense powers of undiscovered levels.
