Born in the wrong body and given the name Jonathan, Johanna Storm began transitioning into her correct gender at the young age of 11. She would later go on to study with NASA and was selected for the mission to go into space and study cosmic rays alongside her sister, Susan, and her sister's fiance, Reed Richards, as well as his best friend, the pilot, Ben Grimm, who Johanna developed a small crush on after they were all bombarded by cosmic rays and mutated into the Fantastic Four. Johanna took on the name of Firestar and quickly became accustomed to the lifestyle of a hero.
Firestar was recruited into the Outsiders under the threat that she would accidentally lose control of her powers and burn her nephew, Franklin, alive. Terrified of this prospect, Johanna agreed to become an Outsider.
She would eventually form a relationship with another Outsider who was recruited after her known as Sunspot. They were very happy together before his untimely death on a mission, which simply strengthened Johanna's resolve to save people on future missions.
