History

You're not a monster, Bruce… Why? 'Cause you were the one who helped me get back up, since dad... If you still think that you are... Then, I'm a monster too, okay? And to be fair... I'm the one who kicked all your bullies' @$$es, remember? So... You could say I was more of a monster before, than you are now, agreed?

Early Years

Jenn Walters Civilian 61615

Jennifer in her usual civilian persona

Jennifer Susan "Jen" Walters (born September 1982) was the consistently tough yet lovable younger cousin of the globally-renowned scientist Bruce Banner and the daughter of highly respected and morally righteous General Morris Walters and Elaine Banner. When she was still young, she and her mother were both heartbroken to find out that her father was wrongly accused of causing the death of one his subordinates in their military base, an incident that was actually committed by a troubled yet influential sergeant named Nick Trask, using his political connections in the family to protect himself from the burdens of legal punishment. Adding insult to injury, the once revered general was mysteriously killed on the night before his trial, decimating the likely chance of clearing his own name and officiating his innocence. Wallowing in great grief due to her familial tragedy, the often optimistic and enthusiastic Jen grew cold, silent, and restless to her relatives and most of her social life as an adolescent.

However, Jen and her mother didn't expect for another tragedy to happen in their lives when Jen's maternal aunt Rebecca was found out to be killed by her mentally-unhinged uncle Brian, leaving his cousin younger Bruce to be completely orphaned when his father was sent to a psychiatric ward for life. Jen's mother unhesitatingly took Bruce and welcomed him into the family, something that Jen didn't realize at the time was a fateful miracle, as Bruce restored Jen's compassion and humanity when she started showing concern for him, even protecting him and some of her closest neighbors from bullies with her solely her heartwarming words, but also with her fists of steel, if she deemed it necessary.

The two continued to rely on each other like brother and sister, and because of Bruce's genuine sense of altruism using his genius intelligence, Jen was also inspired by his perseverance that she eventually pursued law in college so she could look out for others who were wrongly accused of a crime they didn't commit, and ideally speaking, she may be able to clear her father's name even in his passing. In her early adulthood years, Jen graduated from University of California, Los Angeles wherein she subsequently got the chance to enlist in the United States Army with the urge to follow her father's footsteps. Having been mainly stationed in Camp Lehigh, New Jersey for years, she went through extensive training, mostly participating in the field on a few missions, and primarily served as a military lawyer, applying her convincing skills just as she had intended.

Eventually meeting an older Nick Trask as a greedy and abusive colonel, she began a secretive investigation to complete her personal vengeance against the man who framed her father. After a few more years of dedication both in service and in her secret vendetta, Jen eventually able to discover the truth behind her father's unjustified demise, and in doing so, she finally had him confess, something that even Trask's relative politicians were capable to get him out off his cornered situation. Greatly bringing justice to her father's legacy, Jen and her mother couldn't be more overjoyed by her accomplishment. Impressed by her compassion and irrefutable reputation in defending the innocence of her comrades, Jen remained serving as a military lawyer for a while, before she was finally discharged by her superiors. Despite being freed by the shackles of her tragic past, Jen still continued her passion and career as a lawyer in the outside world. Once she set foot on New York City, Jen's arrival caught the attention of the law firm Hogarth, Chao and Goodman, who proceeded to give her a call just after she had moved into her new apartment, inevitably giving Jen a delightful sensation after hearing the offer.

Ultimate War

In the countless crossfires between the Movement and the Ultimate Alliance's forces which ravaged across New York, a crime boss affiliated with the Kingpin's syndicate had crossed paths with her some of her colleagues who impulsively left the building driven by fear and hysteria, encouraging Jen to selflessly risk her own life getting them the safety of the nearby evacuation center. Using her military experience, she successfully got her colleagues into a safer distance while shooting a few hostiles from afar. Unfortunate for Jen, she was suddenly shot in the abdomen by a mob enforcer from behind, much to her colleague's horror who stealthily ran into the evacuation center, seemingly leaving her to bleed out, at least to Jen's eyes. Looking up in the smoky sky while her vision comes to a blur, Jen was ready to accept her fate, thinking of her cousin and mother, right until the cavalry had miraculously arrived for her aid.

A group of paramedics that were covered by S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives had taken care of the hostiles at the area, and Jen was subsequently rescued, not realizing that it was her colleagues, whom she saved, were the ones that called for help after making it inside the evacuation center. Taking her time at the hospital for almost a week, she was visited by her cousin, Bruce Banner, who was now known for being the monstrous hero, the Hulk, rushing into the hospital to comfort his beloved cousin. A blood transfusion from Banner was necessary to save her life, a side effect of the gamma-irradiated blood was that she would also become a gamma mutate being the main result. Bruce willingly gave her a blood transfusion without hesitation or thought of the repercussions, as no other donors of her blood type were available; the radioactive blood mutated Jennifer as it had her cousin, transforming her into a gamma mutate, just like her brother, albeit slightly more different in the aspect that her body shape and mass appears slightly more human-like, becoming into what some people would call her new form as She-Hulk, derived from her cousin's monstrous, and eventually heroic identity.

Heroic Life

Although Jen was at first fearful and unstable while in her form as She-Hulk, she eventually controlled transformed self and still retained the same intelligence she had as the normal Jennifer Walters, thanks to the help of Bruce himself, and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s assistance. She quickly came to appreciate the confidence that had come with being She-Hulk, though she still had some personal objections on that name being her legitimate superpowered identity, which she had thoughts on seeking its possibility after her colleagues had reminded her of her nobility at the face of death. A few months have passed, she felt more comfortable in her form as She-Hulk than in her "normal" form as Jennifer. As a trainee of S.H.I.E.L.D., Jen was randomly given the codename Gamma by a frequently occupied agent, which surprisingly took a liking to her ears the first time she heard it, making it a final preference of her identity over She-Hulk, which she deemed was too derivative for her taste. As she kept looking and moving on the bright side, she gradually became used in transitioning to both forms from time to time, and realized that she has much to offer the world in both her forms, as a superhero-in-training by S.H.I.E.L.D. and as a lawyer.

As a consequence of the entire world after the unfortunate events of Ultimate War, the Superhuman Registration Act was eventually implemented by the United Nations, initiating a set of legal documents designed to regulate the activities of enhanced individuals, specifically those who work for either government agencies such as S.H.I.E.L.D. or for private organizations such as the Avengers, Defenders, and many more. Ratified by 117 nations, the act became a "middle point" between the Avengers' desire to secure world peace and the international community's concern over the repercussions of the actions caused by many unwatched superheroes all around the world. However, this led to a major conflict among the super-powered community, with one side (led by Captain America) opposed to the act resisting registration and the other side (led by Iron Man) supporting registration and trying to enforce the new law.

Being a supporter due to her abundant legal knowledge and experience, Jennifer willingly sided with the faction of Iron Man through S.H.I.E.L.D. when it was taken over by Agent Maria Hill as its Deputy Director. Debuting with the short-lived identity of She-Hulk when registering with the act, Jennifer and joined forces with Stark as part of the Initiative, the Avengers faction that was considered to be "legal" in accordance to the government. While Jennifer was momentarily dazed by the effectivity of the registration when she and her allies found out that Captain America discovered Helmut Zemo to be one of the masterminds of Ultimate War which diverged the Avengers in the first place, she nevertheless stuck to her beliefs and encouraged turning their faction in the authorities, deeming that the law is the law and no one is above it especially if it's for the greater good. Continuing the fight under the registration's initiative, Jennifer became patrolled as an agent of peace and justice while she continued her life as lawyer, trying her best to defend arrested superpowered individuals and keep them from getting a life sentence inside the Raft, still strongly believing on the notion that despite their emotional defiance against authority, everyone deserves at least a shot at redemption.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Gamma Radiation Physiology: As a result of a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner, the Hulk, Jennifer Walters is able to alter her physical form into a female version of the Hulk. As the notorious She-Hulk, Walters' skin, hair, and eyes all turn green. Unlike her cousin, the Hulk, much of Jennifer's gained muscle and bone mass is condensed and several times as dense as that of a human. As a result, though she is noticeably much larger than she is in her normal form, she looks much lighter than she actually is. Also unlike the Hulk, or rather certain Hulk incarnations, Jennifer retains her full intelligence and personality in her gamma-mutated form.

Notes

  • Jennifer used to despise the name She-Hulk due to how derivative and somewhat sexist it came off when she first heard of it. However, ever since using the codename Gamma as her superhero pseudonym, she had since accepted using She-Hulk as the embodying image or brand of her status as a superhuman lawyer without fully overshadowing her excellent reputation as Jen Walters, and thus essentially amalgamating them into a unified yet interdependent persona.

Trivia

  • Jennifer first discovered the cosmic ability of "breaking the fourth wall" when she was young, initially believing she had gone insane since she lost her father. She tried by keeping herself busy and occupied, but her habit of conversing with someone from "the other side" just keeps on reoccurring during the times she's alone, specifically when she's feeling lonely.
    • Only Deadpool was completely aware of this (considering he also has the same ability), and with the help of both him and the Illuminati during the The Retconning, Jennifer had developed embracing her unique ability instead of perceiving it as a mental illness since after all, it was not the case.
