History
You can win a war with war itself. For the very effort is a paradox, and a death sentence.

Jean Grey was one of the first mutants ever recruited by Charles Xavier to join the X-Men. She fought alongside them for many years, and even became engaged to her former classmate and team leader, Scott Summers.
However, the X-Men were caught in the middle of the war that had been instigated by the Order of the World Tree. During the chaos, Jean's mental barriers were broken down by the Phoenix Force dwelling within her, and it effectively claimed ownership of her body in an attempt to shepherd the rest of mutantkind to safety.
This led to a radical shift in personality, as the Phoenix was able to rally the remaining X-Men into joining the Brotherhood of Mutants under Apocalypse's leadership. Even further, she volunteered to become the Horseman of War and to become Apocalypse's wife to truly usher in a new age.
Following the deaths of Apocalypse and Spider-Man, the Phoenix assumed command of her fellow Horsemen, Medusa and Namor, as well as her fellow members of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
