Early Life
John Wolfgang Aurick Kriegermann was born in the poor neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York in the early 20th century where he got his nickname, Bucky, from the doctor after seeing him kicking a lot, one time in his face after his birth. His parents, Johanna Agnes and Jürgen Klaus-Hauke Kriegermann immigrated from Germany with a little money, prompting Klaus to start working as a construction worker while Johanna stayed at home to take care of Bucky. When he was only 3 years old, his mother gave birth to his younger sister, Sandra Hildegarde Kriegermann but she was born prematurely. As the family began to plan to get out of poverty due to the little money brought home, tragedy struck as Klaus got involved in an accident and died from his injuries, and soon after, Sandra got incredibly ill and died before she even turned 2 years old. This brought Johanna into a deep depression and she committed suicide, leaving Bucky the only living family member left. He was later found by a group of people and was taken to an orphanage where he spent his childhood.
At the time of his stay in the orphanage, Bucky encounters a young frail boy getting beaten up by a group of older children. He jumped into the attack, saving the boy by beating the bullies to the ground before the others ran away in fear. After the save, Bucky went up to the boy who thanked him for saving him, introducing himself as Steve Rogers, the person who will eventually become Captain America. Since the save, Bucky became good friends with Steve, looking out for each other whenever bullies try to pick a fight with them. Eventually, their time together came to an end as Bucky was adopted by a foster family who also originated from Germany, leaving Steve behind until he was adopted by Jörrick Erskine. As he grew up, Bucky lived where he began to learn more about his German heritage, at the same time, he began to discover that Pearl Harbor had been attacked by the Japanese army who had formed the Axis Powers with Italy, and Nazi Germany.
World War II
After graduating high school, Bucky encounters Steve once again as they are located at the US Recruiting and Induction Center to get enlisted in the Army. While Steve was rejected due to his frail state and chronic illness, Bucky was accepted because of his fit physique and excelled in training where he earned the rank of Sergeant. After his enlisting, he encounters Steve getting beaten up by a group of men after confronting them in a movie theater and he jumps in, saving Steve once again by beating the bullies down to the ground. He tells Steve that he was being shipped to England with the 107th Infantry Regiment and it brought discouragement with the pre-Super Soldier, leading to Bucky taking him to the Stark Expo where they spent the night together before leaving for England to fight in the war.
The night went well for the two until Steve told him that he was going to continue trying to enlist in the army. But Bucky pleaded to Steve not to enlist for he would get arrested for falsifying enlistment documents. This left Steve frustrated as he began to argue with Bucky, not wanting to stand back while he went to fight for the people of the world. The fight begins to escalate to the point where Steve ends up storming out of the Stark Expo, rejecting Bucky's comfort and ignoring his calls to wait, causing friction between the two childhood friends. At the time of the shipment, Bucky saw that Steve hadn't shown up to see him off, knowing that he was still angry at him for objecting to his motives in enlisting in the army despite his illness and weak physique. He was sent to England where he was put on the front lines to fight against the Nazis along with the British soldiers and with the developed sniping skills he had trained back in training, he shot down every single Nazi soldier that tried to shoot him and his comrades back.
However, he becomes outnumbered and he, along with other soldiers Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan and Gabriel "Gabe" Jones was captured by the members of HYDRA after their tanks entered the battlefield. He was forced to work at a weapons facility in Austria where the remaining members of the Regiment were working on building HYDRA weaponry and was given corporal punishment if he refused to follow orders which he took the worst. Eventually, Bucky became too weak to work and one of HYDRA's scientists Arnim Zola took him to his laboratory where he began to experiment on him as a start on a Super Soldier project he had been working on.
However, he gets a big surprise when he is met by Steve who had undergone a procedure where he became a Super-Soldier, Captain America and he dazedly says, "I thought you were shorter," and Steve commented back by saying, "I thought you were dead," making him see that his best friend believed that he had died in battle but was relieved to see him alive. After Zola escaped with Red Skull who revealed his red disfigured skull-like face after a botched experiment, Steve and Bucky managed to escape the imploding facility, following the freeing of the captured WWII soldiers and returned to base where Bucky cheered for Steve along with a few soldiers, except his bully Gilmore Hodges who had been heckling him since he became Captain America, leading to Bucky wanting to shut him up, but stopped when Peggy Carter punched the lights out of Hodges for his snide comments. After his rescue, Bucky settled in the Whip & Fiddle pub where the other soldiers were enjoying their time and talking about Steve's bravery. He was approached by Steve who told him that he was forming a team called the Howling Commandos with Dungan and Jones, followed by Jim Morita, Jacques Dernier, and James Falsworth. Bucky accepts the recruitment and Steve asks him if he is willing to follow Captain America into the battle against HYDRA Bucky responds that he will follow his friend from Brooklyn in the war and not Captain America.
In the remaining events of World War II, Bucky fought alongside Steve and the rest of the Howling Commandos against HYDRA, sabotaging and ambushing all of the HYDRA bases all over Europe, taking back all of the land, Red Skull had stolen from them. With Steve's tactics and strategy as a leader, Bucky and the Commandos destroyed every single facility and brought the soldiers to justice. They even fought against Nazi Germany, saving many people's lives including 600 men from a Nazi blockade, including Peggy's future husband. The heroic actions brought anger within Red Skull who found his schemes becoming constantly delayed by the actions of Steve, Bucky, and the Howling Commandos standing by his side throughout their continued conflict against HYDRA.
Zola's Capture and meeting Frederick Zemo
One day, the Howling Commandos received news about HYDRA's scientist, Arnim Zola, and his planned escape, leading them to deploy their mission to bring the scientist to custody. Following their plan, Steve and Bucky were waiting for the train and they began to reminisce on their childhood days, talking about their time in Coney Island where Steve threw up from a ride, much to the Super-Soldier's embarrassment. Soon the train was spotted, and the two, along with Jones and Falsworth boarded onto the train by traveling through a zip-line assisted by Dungan and Dernier. Once they got inside, the team split up and Steve gave Bucky one of the firearms as they slowly began to search for Zola. But when they reached for the next carriage, the doors closed and they were ambushed by a group of HYDRA soldiers with one holding a Heavy Assault Rifle which fired at the both of them.
As the two fought, Bucky found himself being cornered by some of the soldiers while trying to open fire at them and Steve came to his aid by swinging around the carriage on a pulley system, knocking the soldier before grabbing the assault rifle, blowing a large hole on the carriage before Bucky was able to shoot the soldiers dead that tried to attack him. As their scuffle with the HYDRA soldiers ended, Bucky asked Steve if he was okay and the Super-Soldier gave him a smile saying, "Never felt this good since I rescued you guys from those bastards." However, before the two could continue on with their mission, another HYDRA soldier used the assault rifle to attack the two soldiers, the blast knocking Bucky to the edge of the speeding train. When Steve takes out the soldier, he quickly reaches for Bucky's hand despite his effort, Bucky falls from the train and into a river, much to Steve's horror and devastation. Jones and Falsworth captured Zola and took him to custody for interrogation while Steve decided to go to the Whip & Fiddle to help him ease the pain from "losing" Bucky. In actuality, Bucky survived the fall but his arm was completely severed and was found by a Soviet soldier and was sent to HYDRA's Soviet wing where he was kept a prisoner for a couple of years.
Zola was held in the Strategic Scientific Reserve's (SSR) custody and was released and he takes Bucky back to HYDRA where he awaits to become the subject of the Winter Soldier Project, where HYDRA plans to create a Super Soldier who doubles as a lethal weapon. However, before the procedure can begin, Bucky is taken out of the HYDRA lab by a scientist named Frederick Zemo who steals the files of the Winter Soldier Project and flees to Germany where the aftermath of World War II was still lingering. He removed the remnants of Bucky's lost arm and replaced it with a cybernetic prosthetic as he was injected with the Super Soldier Serum. Once he was saved, Bucky asked Zemo what was going on, and he told the former Commando that Zola was planning to make him a personal weapon for HYDRA and he had to get him out before he could proceed and he managed to remove the first programming of the Winter Soldier and decided to create a new Super Soldier project but for the right reason. With his body beyond the peak of physical perfection and his arm at the highest level of advanced technology, Zemo began training Bucky to become a skilled spy and bounty hunter for many years and kept him frozen in suspended animation after every mission to permanently eliminate his aging. As his missions went by, Bucky formed a tight-knit bond with Zemo as he continued to take down criminals and members of HYDRA who were involved in the WWII invasion. Once the permanent de-aging was complete, Bucky went under the alias, James Buchanan Barnes while his mission in bringing down HYDRA was on the light as he kept his publicity low-profile.
Reuniting with Steve Rogers
On the rise of his career as a bounty hunter, Bucky was handed a search warrant by Zemo, saying that the FBI, as well as S.H.I.E.L.D., have been searching for a pirate named Georges Batroc for more than $50,000. This brings Bucky interested and accepts the mission of capturing the pirate. He travels to Washington D.C. and when he arrives, his first motive is to go to S.H.I.E.L.D. to get information about Batroc, he discovers that his old childhood friend, Steve Rogers whom he hadn't seen since he fell to his near-death, is working for Nick Fury for two years and also discovers that he had fought in the Battle of New York two years prior. But as he dwelled in more information about his fellow Super-Soldier, he quickly recanted, knowing that he had to find information about Batroc.
