Anthony Edwark Stark, called Tony, is a self-proclaimed eccentric genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist. He is also an armored superhero known as Iron Man. Fresh off from defeating enemies the world over, Stark reluctantly agreed to serve as consultant to Nick Fury's peacekeeping intelligence agency/organization S.H.I.E.L.D. Stark joined the Avengers and helped defeat the Chitauri during the Battle of New York. The following resulted to his post-traumatic stress disorder during his hurdles with the Mandarin.
With Banner and Pym, he later created the artificial intelligence Ultron but their dormant programming resulted Ultron's sentience. The A.I soon converted itself into a robot of immense strength, monotonusly continuously upgrading it's body. The Avengers, along with the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Vision and War Machine defeat Ultron, but ultimately costing Pietro's life.
The attack at Sokovia caused the creation of the Sokovia Accords, a registration act built by the American government so that heroes will be put under full supervision and control of the government. Iron Man promotes this registration act however his once fellow avenger Steve Roger demands independence for crimefighters around the world. Their dividing opinions result to a civil war. Defeated in combat but undefeated in his political support, Stark intentionally lets Rogers escape with Agent 13 (Sharon Carter) but instead of activating the Registration Act, he creates the Illuminati, consisting of Black Panther, Charles Xavier, Blackagar Boltagon and Namor the Atlantean.
