Richard Milhouse "Rick" Jones had spent his life avoiding responsibility. After his parents died while he was still a young 'un, Rick would be tossed from orphanage to orphanage, foster home to foster home, causing trouble wherever he went. He struck out on his own as soon he was able, and soon found himself in even more trouble than before. Though Rick eventually gathered enough funds to buy a car, his lifestyle meant that he spent more time living in it than driving it.
It all came back to bite him when, on a dare from some neighborhood punks, he wandered into the testing range of the new Gamma bomb. Spotting the youth, scientist Bruce Banner rushed out to shoo him away before it detonated. While Banner believed that the bomb's timer had been delayed, a Soviet agent in the lab arranged for it to detonate it on time. Banner narrowly pushed Rick into the safety of a crevice before it went off, and found himself bombarded with Gamma radiation. Bruce was killed in the detonation, though one living thing managed to survive: a spider that had absorbed the blunt of the blast. Mutating rapidly in the anger and pain of its irradiation, it lashed out at the nearby Rick. The youth managed to escape shortly before the military shot down the creature, but it had managed to sink its fangs into him. As it initially displayed no effects, Jones fled into the night.
Haunted by the incident and Banner's death, Rick became determined to put his life back together. Shortly before he was to resume his education, however, he discovered that the bite had in fact granted him the proportionate abilities of the offending spider. Inspired by Bruce's sacrifice, Rick Jones added another aspect to his new life: that of the superheroic vigilante known as Spider-Man.
