Hobie Brown was originally a genius young inventor who invented his own suit of armor to become the masked burglar known as the Prowler. He would clash several times with the original Spider-Man before coming to an agreement with him. From that point on, Brown would occasionally act as the web-slinger's doppelganger. As such, he was considered a likely candidate for the identity of the new Spider-Man when he appeared.
He would eventually be captured by the Jackal as a part of his plan against the new hero, being forcefully bonded to the Venom symbiote and becoming the new Venom.
