Early Life
Born and raised in East Nowhere, Nebraska, Hank was a prodigy from birth, spending his time creating fantastical and fun inventions, encouraged by his parents. However Hank's parents would be killed during a superhuman event when he was just a teenager, marking a serious change in Hank's perspective and mental state. His inventions became more serious and, at times, dangerous. He attended Caltech where his own professors attempted to discourage Pym's dangerous imagination, but he believed them to be small-minded. He excelled regardless, earning multiple doctorates before he turned 20.
Several years later Pym would discover a rare group of subatomic particles, which he would dub "Pym Particles". Pym was able, through the application of magnetic fields, to entrap the particles within two separate serums. One serum would reduce the size of persons and objects, and the other would restore them to their normal size. Pym tested the reducing serum on himself and discovered it was more powerful than he had expected: it reduced him to the size of an insect. Pym became entrapped in an anthill and was pursued by the ants within. He escaped and restored himself to his normal size with his other serum. Pym would soon discover that his serums were too concentrated, and the particles he had used were deeply unstable. They had bonded to his very DNA, giving him the ability to change his size at will. Utilising these powers, alongside a cybernetic helmet he had invented that gave him the ability to telepathically communicate with, and control, insects, Hank became a public hero that the press dubbed Yellowjacket. His identity public, Hank became a celebrity.
Although uncomfortable with his newfound fame it led Hank to meet Janet Van Dyne, an already famous actress who Hank would immediately fall for. On one of their early dates Hank would gift Janet with a special costume that could safely utilise the Pym Particles, and Janet would take on the identity of the Wasp, which would further raise her public profile, and in turn Hanks. Hank and Janet would enjoy a prolific career as both superheroes and public celebrities, and would eventually marry. Over the next several years however Janet would begin to see another side to Hank, the reckless inventor, determined to invent things that would protect the world, without thinking of the consequences. Things would eventually escalate, and Janet would leave Hank, filing for divorce.
Hank would leave the public eye, continuing to create. He would resurface during Namor's attack on New York City, using his powers to protect the city and it's citizens alongside a number of other heroes. In the aftermath he was one of the heroes invited by Susan Storm to form the Avengers and, seeing it as an opportunity to keep a close eye on the superhumans of the world, accepted the offer.
