History
Gary was born in America. He was highly intelligent since childhood and in his college days befriended the fellow scientific mind Gregor Shapanka while attending college. Eventually they went into robotics, and became famed in the field. This grabbed the attention of the powerful industrialist Justin Hammer who hired them to work for his company Hammer Industries. And they accepted.
Hammer had them attempt to build Iron Man-esque armor, and though they tried their best they could not create a source of power strong enough to power the suits akin to Stark's arc reactor. Eventually Hammer learns that a set of rings was found in a tibetan monastery that gave off powerful energy signatures. Unknown to them, they are magically powered rings that once belonged to the powerful ancient Chinese warlord known as the Mandarin, the ones of fire and ice. He had his men steal the rings and gave them to the two scientists who had theorized that perhaps those rings could be used to power their suits. They put them in and the suits were finally operational. Gilbert's attained the power of fire. Hammer had them test them out by sending them to sabotage one of Tony Stark's factories. The two go on to become Justin Hammer's main enforcers.
Eventually Zhang Khan, The Mandarin, would track down the Makulan rings to Firebrand and Blizzard. Being on a quest to recover all ten of the rings. He manages to take on both of them single-handedly and take the rings back.
