Origins[]
Founded in the 1950's in the wake of the end of War World II the European Defense Initiative was the answer to America's development of S.H.I.E.L.D. it serving the same purpose as a multi-disciplined intelligence, law enforcement, and scientific research agency, but one solely dedicated to the interest of the European Union. Despite this S.H.I.E.L.D and the E.D.I. ended up on very friendly terms, developing a healthy working relationship. Which allowed the European-based organization to become involved with some of the biggest names in the superhero community such as the Avengers and the mutant superhero team the X-Men.
The agency also served as a way to monitor the various superhumans and supernatural entities and threats that would develop across Europe, and deal with them if needed, without relying on outside assistance. They even developed their own version of the super-soldier program, spearheaded by the agencies first director, and one of its founding members, James Braddock. Who developed exo-suits that empowered many of Initiatives agents, including Braddock's future son Brian Bradock, who would go on to become the hero Captain Britain.
