Emma Frost is a sometimes-villain, sometimes-hero usually associated with the X-Men or the Helfire Club, a group of their adversaries. This is the Joint Venture Universe version of the character.
History
Early life
To look at her now, it would be a surprise to anyone that Emma Frost's original ambition was to be a schoolteacher. Unfortunately, she was born of the Boston-based Frost family, an extremely wealthy old-money family, with extremely wealthy old-money expectations. She was going to be a socialite. She was going to be powerful, influential, famous. She was not going to teach.
The same expectations that Emma faced applied to all three of her siblings as well, at least in theory. In practice, every one of the Frost children dealt with the burden of expectation and the noblesse oblige their parents attempted to impart to them very differently.
Emma's oldest sister, Adrienne, was the most calculated. She remained coolly, manipulatively obeisant to the elder Frosts' wishes. Adrienne worked to curry favor, and "kept an eye" on her younger siblings - which is to say, she reported to her parents any and all aberrant behavior, real or perceived, on the part of said siblings.
The youngest sister, Cordelia tended to be the most babied Frost child. Kept spoiled and oblivious, she was doted on and lived life as the closest thing to an 'innocent' the Frost family could rear.
Emma and her twin brother, Christian, on the other hand, were caught in the middle., forgotten when they were not being judged and found wanting. Emma's ambitions were too plebeian, while Christian's were seemingly nonexistent. The shared strife, rather than tearing them apart, pulled them closer together, to the point that when Christian came out to the family as gay (and was, predictably, shunned and ostracized for it), Emma left home with him.
She never saw her parents alive again.
Criminal Minds
Christian and Emma may have split from the Frost family, but splitting from the Frost family fortune was something else altogether. Thanks to some shrewd business on Christian's part, and a great deal of manipulation from Emma, the Frost siblings managed to become wealthy enough to buy out one of their father's major corporations.
At first, their revenge seemed to go off without a hitch. Now they had a source of revenue to live their lives as they pleased...but how would they keep that revenue stream going?
The answer came in a most unexpected fashion. While exploring the city in search of inspiration, suddenly Emma found she could hear the thoughts of the people around her. While at first it felt overwhelming, a lifetime of controlling herself under the weight of her parents' mental and emotional abuse gave her a distinct advantage.
With this new ability, and Christian's enthusiastic support, Emma went on a 'mental shopping spree', going to gathering places of the most intelligent, learned people she could find, and psychically 'stealing' their knowledge, their education, and their life experiences. Overnight, Emma Frost became a certified genius-level intellect in her own right.
With her newly-acquired knowledge and acurmen, Emma turned the corporation she and Christian had bought from under their parents' noses into Frost Industries, setting it up at the forefront of communication electronics and technology. Christian ran the day-to-day operations while Emma sought to accrue more wealth and power for the siblings. That was when she started hearing rumors about the legendary Hellfire Club

Powers & abilities
All of Emma's generation of the Frost family developed mutant abiltiies due to some unknown factor in their environment. Most of them are some variation on psychic, but Emma is by far the most powerful of her siblings.
Telepathy: Emma Frost is one of the premier telepaths on Earth-JV, second only to the likes of Charles Xavier and Jean Grey. Like most telepaths, she can read minds, project thoughts, link people's minds together in a psychic network, create mental illusions, and attack a person's mind directly with "psi-bolts" that cause excruciating pain.
Mind control: While telepathy is common in the Joint Venture Universe, each telepath takes a different approach to the use of their powers, practicing different specializations and excelling in different things. Perhaps due to her upbringing of tight control and her own youhtful rebellion, Emma's specialty is in control and domination. She can plant hypnotic suggestions in a person's mind, compelling them to perform a specific response to specific stimuli with little to no resistance. She can control a person's bodily responses, to the point where she can completely neutralize physical pain and discomfort. Similarly, she can, through sheer force of will, temporarily "correct" a person's mental or psychological trauma or blocks, eliminating phobias and fear responses, suppressing anxiety or stress, or conversely, exacerbating these to the point of incapacitation. Her own training in psychology, combined with her powers, allows her to suppress or exploit the most vulnerable parts of a person's psyche. Finally, if subtler means are insufficient, she can simply dominate someone else's mind entirely, completely supplanting their will with her own.
Diamond Skin: Due to a run-in with Genoshan genetic manipulators, Emma also possesses a "secondary mutation" that allows her to transform her entire body into a solid, but still mobile, diamond-like substance. This renders Emma superhumanly strong and nearly impervious to any form of physical attack, though it comes with its own drawbacks (see 'weaknesses'). She is also completely immune to all forms of telepathic or psychic intrusion upon her mind in this form.
Weaknesses
Concentration: To utilize her powers to their fullest extent, Emma must be given the time and space to concentrate. Some of her powers can be used instantly, almost without effort, but to project her will onto someone else's requires considerably more effort. If at any point she loses focus or concentration before her task is complete, Emma will lose control of the mind she is trying to affect.
Diamond form weaknesses: While Emma Frost's diamond form is extremely powerful and offers her a considerably physical edge in combat, it has several drawbacks:
- Telepathic block: In addition to being immune to all forms of psychic intrusion, Emma's own telepathy is completely blocked off in her diamond form.
- Emotional stunting: Emma's feelings and empathy are also cut off in her diamond form, rendering her nearly emotionless. These emotions will come flooding back whenever she reverts to flesh and blood, which runs its own risks.
- Shatterpoint: Finally, although Emma's diamond form is nearly impervious to harm, a precise strike with enough force to a singular part of her body will shatter her.
