Emily Guerrero grew up in New Mexico, raised by her loving mother and distant father. When Terrigen Mists began spreading across the world, it was revealed that both Emily and her father were Inhumans. After her mother died in the Terrigenesis process, her father went insane and began terrorizing people as the Shredded Man.
Emily took on the name Synapse and joined forces with the Avengers to bring him down. She was then introduced to Queen Medusa of the Inhuman Royal Family on Attilan. The Guerreros were given the opportunity to return with her, and they both accepted.
However, it wasn't long until her father joined Prince Maximus in betraying the Royal Family. During the confrontation, her father was killed by King Black Bolt, which Synapse accepted as a necessity to defeat the rebellion. She had resigned to the fact that she lost her father a long time ago.
She would then remain with the Inhuman Royal Family for some time, becoming good friends with Inferno, and even accompanying the Royal Family to the battle on Hala. Following the death of King Black Bolt and the crippling of the Kree Empire, Synapse joined the remaining cadre of Inhumans led by Queen Medusa to set up a new civilization elsewhere in the cosmos.

- She has had crushes on both Inferno and Quicksilver, and was disappointed when she discovered they each had complicated relationships with Queen Medusa and Princess Crystal, respectively. Since then, she has become close with Triton and the Kree refugee, Noh-Varr.
