Edward Whelan, also known as Vermin, was a young mutant orphan. He discovered his powers while in the orphanage, and he used his powers to defend himself from bullies. Eventually, he ran away after facing the grim realization that he would most likely be stuck there forever, as no one would want to adopt a mutant. Later on, he found friends within the New Warriors. However, he eventually left the team so he could head to New York and join the Jean Grey Institute for Higher Learning, planning to eventually return to his hometown and rejoin the New Warriors, but only after getting a full high school education.

- Super Agility - Edward has superhuman agility and fighting skills.
- Communication with Rodents - Edward has the ability to communicate with rodents, including mice, rats, bats, and etc.
- Super Senses - Edward has enhanced senses, such as super hearing and super smelling.
- Night Vision - Edward has the ability to see in pitch dark.
