History[]
The Trojan War broke out between Greece and Troy in the 13th Century BC after the Olympian Aphrodite made Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world and husband of King Menelaus of Sparta, fall in love with Prince Paris of Troy. During the Trojan War, the Asgardian Thor and his brother Loki also found themselves involved. Thor encountered Aeneas, the demigod warrior and son of Aphrodite and Loki encountered King Odysseus of Ithaca.
In the 3rd Century BC, the Pharaoh Imhotep founded the Brotherhood of the Shield and recruited the mutant En Sabah Nur and an individual known as the Moon Knight against a Brood invasion.
One century later, Archimedes, a Greek member of the Brotherhood of the Shield, built the Colossus of Rhodes and used it to defeat a Kree Sentry, but at the cost of the statue.
In the 6th Century AD, Sir Percy of Scandia met King Arthur Pendragon and aided him in his war against the latter's son, Mordred, and sister, Morgan le Fay. Camelot began to fall when it was learned that Sir Lancelot had an affair with Arthur's wife, Queen Guinevere, allowing Mordred and Morgan to defeat them and kill their king.
During the Second Crusade, which began in 1144, Bennet du Paris, a Templar Knight, encountered the ancient Egyptian mutant En Sabah Nur in the legendary Tower of Power. Nur unlocked Paris' mutant powers, calling him "Exodus". Eobar Garrington, another knight, witnessed Paris' encounter with Nur. Nur ordered Paris to kill Garrington, but the French knight refused and called the Egyptian a "false god"; in response, Nur cursed him and sealed him away in a crypt in the Swiss Alps. Between the Second and Third Crusades, the Knights Templar attempted to invade Wakanda, but were repelled quickly.
When the Third Crusade began, Adam Destine joined the Crusaders who were lead by Richard the Lionheart against Saladin's armies. During the Third Crusade, a knight named Guy de Montfort attempted to kill the king, but was thwarted by the Crusader El Alemain. After the Third Crusade, one of the knights, Prester John, traveled to the Isle of Avalon; there he sat on the Seat of Survival which placed him in suspended animation for centuries.
The English Civil War started over a conflict between King Charles I and the Parliament. Mortimer Rymer, who was later cursed as a vampire, fought on the side of the Royalists during the war. During the war, Oliver Cromwell lead the Parliament's army to victory, leading to the execution of King Charles.
During the American Revolution in the 1770s and early 1780s, Captain Steven Rogers, Wallace Worthington, and Ulysses Bloodstone for the Continental Army. Sir William Taurey and Sir William Scandia fought for the British Army during the war. In 1776, a group of Skrulls came to Earth and one of them attempted to impersonate Thomas Jefferson to ensure that slavery remained in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. The Skrulls were defeated.
During the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1815, the pseudo-vampire Zacheriah Ravencraft fought for the British Army under the Arthur Wellseley, the Duke of Wellington against Napoléon Bonaparte.
The American Civil War broke out in 1861 after several southern American states seceded from the Union. Notable individuals who fought for the Union Army included the Canadian mutants James Howlett, Victor Creed, his brother Saul, the spy John Steele, and Major Tyrell. Notable individuals who fought for the Confederate Army included Jeb Lee, a mutant who later became Apocalypse's Horseman of Famine, Colonel Richard Trask, Aloysius Thorndrake, who would later travel to Mars through a portal, Travis Parham, who became a Spirit of Vengeance, Richard Cassidy, and an individual who would later become known as the Phantom Gunman.
World War I broke out in Europe after the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Superheroes were present but uncommon during World War I. Britain and France formed the Freedom's Five to aid them in their war against the Central Powers; its leader was Union Jack and its members were the Crimson Cavalier, the Phantom Eagle, the Silver Squire, Sir Steel, and the Iron Fist, who replaced the injured Sir Steel in 1916. A major enemy of the Freedom Five was Baron Blood, Union Jack's brother who had betrayed his country for Germany. In 1917, the Freedom's Five were called to London to help defend against invading Martians. After America joined World War I in 1917, U.S. military personnel including James Howlett, Victor Creed, his brother, Saul, Isaac Christians, John Steele, a member of the Kale family, and Joseph Rogers found themselves fighting in the trenches of Northern France.
After World War I, the world experienced the Spanish Flu which killed millions worldwide. After the pandemic ended, America entered the Roaring Twenties, a period of economic growth that saw anti-communist sentiment in the country, the rise of gangsters such as Al Capone, and racial tensions. During this time, James Howlett, Victor, and Saul Creed smuggled liquor for Capone. During this time, the goddess Aphrodite also came to Earth in pursuit of human pleasures and became a model for Beauty Magazine.
The 1930s were when superheroes first came to prominence. During the mid-1930s, the Nazi HYDRA and the communist Leviathan were both formed. Johann Schmidt, the apparent founder of HYDRA, named his organization after a cult that worshipped the ancient inhuman Hive. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy supported Francisco Franco's nationalists against the Spanish Republic who were supported by the Soviet Union and the communists. During the war, James Howlett and Eugene Judd traveled to Spain on a mission and met Ernest Hemingway, who was writing a story about the war for the American Newspaper Alliance. Notable individuals who fought for the nationalists included Horst Schlachter and Zacheriah Ravencraft. American playboy Dan Kane fought against the fascists during the Spanish Civil War under the guise of "Captain Terror". Gustav Fiers, an arms dealer based in New York City, sold arms to both sides of the war. The Spanish Civil War ended on April 1st, 1939. Later that month, the crew of the S.S. Recovery was killed by the Atlantean prince Namor, who, afterwards, was poised to declare war on the surface world. Two months later, a vigilante known as the Angel surfaced in New York City. In August of 1939, Professor Phineas Horton created the first android, which he dubbed the Human Torch.
In September of 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, prompting Britain and France to declare war on Germany. Although, America opted to remain neutral during the first two years of the war, some superheroes took the liberty of fighting Nazis overseas and Nazis who happened to be present in the United States. In 1940, after the British and French armies evacuated Dunkirk, the V-Battalion was formed. 1940 saw the introduction of more superheroes including Aarkus, the original Vision, the Eternals Thena and Makkari, and Claire Voyant, the original Black Widow. In 1941, the Whizzer, a mutant with superhuman speed, and the Blazing Skull, a journalist who had the power to control fire bestowed upon him, emerged in the public eye. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December of that year, the United States declared war on Japan, causing Japan's German and Italian allies to declare war on America. The United States government formed the S.S.R. as a response to the German HYDRA and the Soviet Leviathan. In order to increase their chances of winning the war, America recruited Dr. Abraham Erskine, who had fled Nazi Germany and had a serum that could enhance an individual. Steve Rogers, a young man who was rejected by the U.S. Army after being deemed physically unfit, was offered a chance to take the Super-Soldier Serum. Rogers accepted this offer and became the superhero Captain America and fought alongside his longtime friend Bucky Barnes. During World War II, the Invaders, the Twelve, the Young Allies, the Kid Commandos, and the Liberty Legion were formed by America and the Allies in order to increase their chances of winning the war. Notable non-superhero groups during this war included the Howling Commandos, the Leatherneck Raiders, the Deadly Dozen, and the Crazy S.U.E.S. During this war, individuals including the HYDRA officers Red Skull, Arnim Zola, the Baron von Strucker, Doctor Faustus, Wolfgang Brenner, and Werner Reinhardt, Wehrmacht officers Ernest Mueller, Fritz Klaue , the Baron Zemo, the scientist Mister Sinister, and the Eternal Kro, who was under the guise of Rudolph Hendler, allied themselves with the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers employed the Super-Axis, a team of superpowered individuals that consisted of the exiled Atlantean U-Man, the Japanese-American mutant Lady Lotus, the British fascist Baron Blood and the Nazi super-soldiers Master Man and Warrior Woman. The Invaders' first mission was to fight against the Super-Axis who were attacking New York City. James Howlett and the Creed brothers participated in the Invasion of Normandy alongside the Invaders and the Howling Commandos. HYDRA investigated topics such as the occult, aliens, mutants, and inhumans on behalf of the Nazi Party and acquired the Tesseract, one of the Infinity Stones. While the Invaders fought on the Western Front, the Liberty Legion fought in the Pacific Theater. In the late stages of the war, HYDRA betrayed the Nazi Party and decided to pursue their own agendas. In 1945, Captain America, Bucky, Agent Carter, and the Howling Commandos attacked the Red Skull's base in Austria, which housed an advanced bomber known as the Valkyrie which intended to attack the United States. Captain America fought against the Red Skull, who escaped on the Valkyrie, but not without being followed by the super-soldier. The two fought on board the aircraft and Schmidt attempted to use the Tesseract against Rogers, but was teleported away instead, gone without a trace. The war ended when American pilots dropped atom bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. James Howlett, who was a prisoner of war near Nagasaki, shielded Shingen Harada from the explosion, leaving the mutant scarred. After the war, many Nazi officers including Arnim Zola, Wolfgang von Strucker, and Werner Reinhardt were recruited by the United States and used this opportunity to allow HYDRA to infiltrate the American government. Other officers such as Johann Fennhoff were recruited by Leviathan and abandoned HYDRA's ideology and agenda.
After World War II, the All-Winners Squad was formed from the remnants of the Invaders and the Liberty Legion. The team's first mission was to stop a man called Isbisa from selling weapons to America's enemies.
In 1950, S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed from the remnants of the S.S.R. When the Korean War, started that year, the All-Winners Squad was sent to assist America and South Korea. During the war, Leviathan sent the first incarnation of the Soviet-Super Soldiers to assist North Korea and China.
In 2008, Tony Stark travelled to Afghanistan to witness the testing of a new Stark Industries weapon. During his time there, Stark was captured by the terrorist group the Ten Rings and forced to build them weapons. Instead, Stark built himself a metal mechanical suit, which he used to escape from the Ten Rings. Some time after Stark returned to America, he learned that his mentor and friend Obadiah Stane had sold weapons to the Ten Rings. Stark confronted Stane about this and battled against him, killing him in the end. In the aftermath, Stark was dubbed "Iron Man" by the media.
In August of 2010, Johnny Blaze is turned into the Ghost Rider after being bonded with the demon Zarathos after being cursed by the demon Mephisto. Later that month, scientist Reed Richards, his girlfriend Sue Storm, his best friend Colonel Ben Grimm, and Sue's brother the Human Torch rode a rocket ship into space, where they were exposed to radiation and gained superpowers. In late 2010, Thor, the Norse God of Thunder, is banished to Earth by his father Odin and Mjolnir was sent to Earth along with him.
In April of 2012, Ghost Rider arrived in Los Angeles to pursue members of Satan's Servants . During his time in Los Angeles, Ghost Rider came upon the dying Robbie and Gabe Reyes, who were critically injured after being shot and burned alive by the Urban Alliance, and saved them both by turning Robbie into the fifth Ghost Rider. May, Loki, the Norse god of mischief, came to Earth, stole the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D. and lead a Chitauri army in an attempt to invade and conquer Earth. In response to this, Director Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. formed a team of superheroes called the Avengers. The Avengers were able to defeat Loki and recover the Tesseract. After the battle, Loki was returned to Asgard by Thor.
In late May, half of life on Earth-19998 was wiped out by Thanos during the Decimation.
